Trilogy Federal is seeking an AWS Database Architect to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Information & Technology (OIT), Product Delivery Service (PDS), Corporate Service Line. The ideal candidate will design, implement, and optimize cloud-based database solutions that support scalable, secure, and high-performing applications. This role ensures database architectures align with organizational objectives, industry best practices, and AWS Well-Architected Framework standards. The architect collaborates closely with engineering, DevOps, security, and product teams to deliver reliable and resilient data platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in database design, development, and administration within AWS, including hands-on experience with AWS RDS and related database services
  • AWS certification such as Database – Specialty or Solutions Architect
  • Experience designing and supporting large-scale AWS database systems.
  • Hands-on expertise with RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB,MongoDB, CosmosDB Redshift, ElastiCache and EMR and other AWS data services.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, NoSQL database paradigms, including document-oriented databases such as MongoDB
  • Experience designing and managing caching database solutions (e.g., Redis, Memcached) to optimize application performance and reduce latency
  • Experience with performing query optimization, caching strategies and capacity planning using performance insights and CloudWatch.
  • Solid understanding of AWS networking, security, and IAM as they relate to cloud data infrastructure
  • Experience with migrating applications from one authorization boundary to another in AWS.
  • Knowledge of database migration techniques and modernization approaches.
  • Understanding of AWS networking, IAM, VPC design, and encryption best practices.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as CloudFormation, Terraform, or CDK.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and APM tools such as CloudWatch, Datadog, or Dynatrace.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and strong communication skills with ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python) and CICD tools, specifically Jenkins.
  • Ability to lead complex technical discussions and drive architectural direction.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with .NET or Java application development — understanding of how applications interact with and consume database layers is a plus
  • Experience working with Jira as a data source, including knowledge of its underlying data structures and APIs
  • Hands-on experience or interest in migrating project management and workflow data (such as Jira) into SQL or NoSQL database solutions, including data modeling, ETL design, and schema planning for ticket, sprint, and workflow data
  • Experience working in enterprise, government, or regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD automation for data components.
  • Knowledge of FedRAMP, HIPAA, SOC2, or similar compliance frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement relational (Microsoft SQL Server) and non-relational (DynamoDB, Cosmos DB, MongoDB) database technologies
  • Develop database strategies that support scalability, fault tolerance, data integrity, and high availability.
  • Lead migration initiatives from on-premises or legacy databases to AWS using DMS, SCT, or custom data pipelines.
  • Design and architect cloud-native database solutions on AWS, with deep expertise in RDS and adjacent AWS data services
  • Define standards and best practices for database security, availability, performance, and cost optimization
  • Collaborate with application architects and developers to ensure database designs align with application requirements
  • Implement disaster recovery, backup strategies, and high-availability configurations using AWS-native tooling
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to database administrators and engineers
  • Evaluate emerging AWS database technologies and make recommendations for adoption
  • Produce architectural documentation, and diagrams
  • Implement and enforce database security best practices involving IAM, KMS, encryption, networking, and compliance controls.
  • Conduct database performance tuning, including index optimization, query analysis, and resource right-sizing.
  • Partner with application teams to define data models, schema design, and efficient access patterns.
  • Configure and maintain monitoring, alerting, logging, and backup processes using CloudWatch, AWS Backup, EventBridge, and related tools.
  • Develop Infrastructure-as-Code templates (CloudFormation, Terraform, or CDK) for consistent database provisioning.
  • Participate in architectural reviews, security assessments, and design sessions to ensure adherence to governance standards.
