About The Position

Leidos is seeking a highly skilled Database Architect to be part of a mission applications development team for the Department of Justice. We are looking for a strong candidate with Database Architecture, experience with SQL, PostgreSQL, automation and scripting in addition to query optimization identification and remediation skills. Primary Responsibilities · Become the expert on current application database architecture for a suite of 17 applications across two customer agency branches. · Lead, develop, diagram, and implement modernized database architecture(s) to align with modernization efforts by guiding the engineering and development teams. · Streamline and optimize database infrastructure to include more efficient processing and modern architecture to facilitate strategic initiatives. · Overall responsibility to maintain stable, efficient, and performant database operations in support of applications. · Works with infrastructure engineering to forecast and predict database load and performance requirements. · Designs metrics and assists in data gathering to support reporting of potential end-user application experience. · Leverage cloud technologies as applicable to continuously modernize legacy infrastructure. · Optimize and validate software, processes, and script usage of database tables to ensure performance. · Define and enforce enterprise database standards and data governance practices across all applications · Design and oversee data integration patterns (ETL/ELT, APIs, streaming) to ensure reliable data flow between systems · Lead adoption of database DevOps and automation practices, including CI/CD, schema versioning, and automated provisioning Basic Qualifications · Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering or a related field; Masters or Doctorate degree may substitute for required experience · 7-10 years of database engineering/architecture experience, including ownership of complex, multi-application environments · Experience in MS SQL Server database, NoSQL databases (Mongo, Casandra), Objective related databases (PostGres), and data processing services. · Skilled in troubleshooting performance issues, optimizing queries, managing caching, clustering, and leveraging auto-scaling to handle workloads. · Proven ability to design and implement scalable, modern database architectures aligned with application modernization efforts · Hands-on experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and troubleshooting bottlenecks · Experience modernizing legacy systems, including migration to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) · Strong understanding of capacity planning, load forecasting, and high availability/disaster recovery strategies · Ability to lead and guide engineering teams on database design, usage, and best practices · Experience working across teams to align database architecture with application and infrastructure design · Ability to define and implement database metrics, monitoring, and performance reporting tied to user experience. · Knowledge of data security, access controls, and compliance considerations in enterprise environments · Strong skills in architecture documentation and diagramming for complex systems Preferred Qualifications · Proven leadership of large-scale modernization efforts, especially transforming legacy database ecosystems into cloud-native or hybrid architectures across multiple applications · Deep experience with both relational and NoSQL/distributed data systems, including selecting the right data store for different use cases (polyglot persistence) · Advanced cloud architecture expertise, including designing for serverless, event-driven, and microservices-based data patterns · Experience in federal or highly regulated environments, including implementing secure, compliant architectures (e.g., FedRAMP, FISMA) · Strong troubleshooting skills for database related issues and incidents. Requirements
