About The Position

The AVP, Software Engineering role for Security & Infrastructure (S&I) serves as the enterprise leader for security and infrastructure strategy, portfolio management, and transformation delivery, with accountability for aligning technology and security investments to business priorities while ensuring predictable, high-quality outcomes. You’ll be responsible for defining and executing strategy, leading portfolio governance, business case rigor, financial management prioritization, and vendor partnerships; and establishing centralized metrics, reporting, and risk oversight. The role drives AI-enabled delivery, DevSecOps maturity, and operating model evolution, influencing how work is executed across Security & Infrastructure. Success requires balancing speed, quality, and flow of work through data-driven decisions, partnering across S&I leadership, delivery teams, and stakeholders, and building high-performing teams through strong talent, performance, and organizational leadership. The ideal candidate demonstrates an engineering mindset across both infrastructure and application development, along with excellent communication skills (verbal, written, facilitation, negotiation, and presentation) and the ability to provide technical, project, and people leadership. This individual brings strong information security and project management capabilities, with the ability to identify, analyze, and mitigate risk, operate effectively across all levels of technical and executive leadership, leverage technology in innovative ways to meet risk management requirements, and foster strong relationships across the enterprise and with external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Technical and managerial experience.
  • Proven software development knowledge / delivery expertise leveraging Lean, Agile and DevOps principles for enterprise scale development efforts across a variety of technical domains.
  • Demonstrated Relationship Management capabilities.
  • Proven ability to lead, supervise, motivate and develop employees as normally acquired through 10+ years Information Systems leadership experience.
  • Prior experience with large, complex and multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure is a definite differentiator.
  • Successfully led organizations through both operational and growth challenges.
  • Able to apply & optimize resources and technologies prudently.
  • Experience overseeing and managing third-party vendor solutions.
  • Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
  • Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction and executive oversight to the services performed by Software Development Services (SDS)
  • Enable the implementation of the Nationwide Technology Strategy and achieving yearly objectives.
  • Provide strategic leadership by driving innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Provide solid general management capabilities to this area through strong operational management, financial management and people management based on the guidelines established within Nationwide Technology.
  • Establish and maintain strong customer relationships with business unit CIO Offices, BSA leaders, and ECIO executives.
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with peers within the SDS team and the Program and Application Services (PAS) office.
  • Participate actively in Nationwide’s IT initiatives to support our strategies and continuous improvement as one Nationwide team.
  • Responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of software by leveraging software engineering best practices along with industry best practices in “HOW” work is accomplished on Nationwide Application Assets.
  • Partners with other delivery roles to measure delivery progress and guide improvements in speed, quality, productivity, and continuous delivery on a year over year basis.
  • Governs best practice adoption by working with BSA leaders, Project Delivery Services, Requirements and Testing Services and other stakeholders to drive effective, efficient and high-quality software implementations from within our Nationwide Agile teams.
  • Leverages best practices related to requirements flow, software design, Agile and DevOps principles.
  • Acts as a thought leader within Technology and fosters close working relationships with the other components of Nationwide Technology.
  • Drives continuous improvement in software development and other Technology capabilities.
  • Helps drive connectivity on best practice adoption within Nationwide and from outside Nationwide.
  • Directs the personnel administration of Technology employees which includes but is not limited to hiring, training, supervising and promoting subordinates or their staff regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, age, gender or non-disqualifying handicap/disability.
