About The Position

The Avionics Technician performs avionics maintenance and troubleshooting on aircraft, including in back shop environments as required. This role is responsible for the maintenance, testing, inspection, repair, and integration of aircraft electrical, electronic, computer systems, and research test equipment and payloads on NASA assigned research aircraft platforms. The technician will use NASA’s automated maintenance data system (NAMIS) to maintain equipment records and document all avionics and aircraft electrical repairs. They will also be responsible for updating, programming, and maintaining navigational and flight management system databases, disposing of hazardous materials, and practicing good housekeeping, tool control, and Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention.

Requirements

• Electrical and electronic malfunction troubleshooting skills required.
• Systems knowledge should include aircraft radar, communications, navigation, flight control (autopilot), Flight Management, and flight display systems.
• Must possess in-depth knowledge of advanced electronic principles and circuit analysis.
• Ability to interpret schematic diagrams, engineering drawings, and charts of assigned systems.
• Required to trace signal flow and understand interrelationships of circuits.
• Possess demonstrable soldering, cable, crimp, and harness (CCH) fabrication skills.
• Beginner to intermediate computer skills specifically using Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to learn additional computer skills or software programs.
• Ability to enter data accurately into databases.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Interpersonal skills are necessary to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff.
• Will also routinely interact with other crew members.
• Must possess effective oral and technical written communication skills to clearly communicate information to others.
• Ability to use general office equipment such as fax, phone, copier, scanner, printers, etc.
• Ability to follow a process.
• Strong professional customer service skills, including active listening, prompt service, and follow-up.
• Strong decision analysis and problem-solving skills.

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• 5+ years of aircraft avionics experience with fixed/rotor wing commercial, Government or DOD aircraft required.
• Experience supporting a NASA/DoD contract.
• Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Government Security Clearance.

Nice To Haves

• Working knowledge of advanced software applications is preferred.
• Prefer Level 1 Certification in ESD Protection (Electrostatic).
• May require a FCC GROL Certification.
• Prefer Gulfstream experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs avionics maintenance and troubleshooting on aircraft.
• Uses NASA’s automated maintenance data system (NAMIS) to maintain equipment records and document maintenance actions for all avionics and aircraft electrical repairs.
• Responsible for the maintenance, testing, inspection, repair, and integration of aircraft electrical, electronic, computer systems, and research test equipment and payloads in NASA assigned research aircraft platforms.
• Inspects, tests, and operates avionic and electrical test equipment to ensure serviceability and proper operation, and ensures test equipment calibration schedules are up to date.
• Completes Engineering Work Orders (EWOs) in a timely and accurate manner.
• Removes, disassembles, repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion, assembles, and reinstalls avionics and aircraft electrical components and accessories.
• Updates, programs, and maintains navigational and flight management system databases on assigned aircraft.
• Disposes of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local, and federal environmental standards and regulations.
• Practices good housekeeping, tool control, and Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention in accordance with company and NASA policies and procedures.
• Inspects and maintains aircraft batteries and test equipment.
• Performs scheduled and un-scheduled aircraft maintenance inspections and repairs as required.
• Performs aircraft ground support duties, including towing, marshalling, and jacking aircraft.
• Performs maintenance on aircraft, including avionics, mechanical systems, and/or ground support equipment.
• Repairs, inspects, and maintains structural, mechanical, and electrical elements of the aircraft.
• Trains others in the use of a wide variety of diagnostics devices, computers, hand and mechanical tools.
• Provides oversight and directs and trains others in the completion of aircraft-related maintenance tasks.
• May include Designated System Inspector (DSI) duties.
• Troubleshoots systems as required to meet customer needs.
• Documents maintenance as per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
• Maintains control of tools, reporting missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the supervisor.
• Inventories and inspects tools on a regular basis and replaces worn or broken tools.
• Complies with safety rules and regulations while performing day-to-day maintenance.
• Promptly reports all accidents, injuries, safety violations, and/or unsafe practices or procedures to supervisor.
• Performs other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
