About The Position

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized, technically strong, and passionate individual to join our Avionics Systems team in Santa Cruz, CA, to support the development of the Avionics and Lighting System on the Joby S4. In this role, you will focus on the flight deck, including flight displays, communication and surveillance equipment, and aircraft lighting, all supporting the maturation of these systems from development through FAA type certification. You will develop and execute system-level test procedures in our Integrated Test Lab and in support of flight test, investigate and resolve issues found in test, and refine system requirements based on feedback from Human Factors, System Safety, Systems Engineering, and Flight Test. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role where your work directly produces the evidence that certifies a first-of-its-kind aircraft.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's of Science in Engineering - Aerospace, Electrical or Mechanical preferred
  • Bachelor's degree +5yrs; Advanced degree +3yrs;
  • Understands how to operate in a “fast-paced, high-quality, and lean/scrappy team”
  • Understanding and application of disciplined systems engineering processes
  • Strong understanding of the requirements management process
  • Understanding of Civil Aircraft development standards - ARP4754, DO-178, etc
  • Familiarity with safety assessment concepts
  • Familiarity with Avionics Flight Decks (Garmin G3000/5000, Honeywell Anthem, etc)
  • Familiarity with environmental qualification methods such as DO-160
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively, with self-starter skills that enable self-sufficiency

Nice To Haves

  • FAA Private pilot license
  • Garmin Flight Deck experience
  • Previous experience in laboratory testing
  • Familiarity with FAA Part 23, Part 25, Part 27, and/or Part 29 Certification Regulations (Part 23 is highly desired)
  • Familiarity with safety assessment processes, methods, and analyses (FHA, FMEA/FMECA, FTA, CCA) used in safety assessments (PSSA, SSA) per SAE ARP4761
  • Familiarity with human factors concepts
  • Use of Requirements Management tools (working knowledge of Siemens Polarion is a plus)

Responsibilities

  • Work within the Avionics Systems team to develop and execute system test procedures
  • Support Flight Test with Avionics system testing and evaluations, through development tests, company tests, and finally certification tests
  • Collaborate with Flight Test instrumentation and laboratory instrumentation teams to implement fault injection and data capture equipment
  • Investigate flight test and Integrated Test Lab issues
  • Define and update avionics and lighting system requirements based on feedback from Human Factors, Systems Engineering, System Safety, and Flight Test
  • Review the Electrical and Mechanical design drawings
  • Manage avionics and lighting equipment changes in labs and on aircraft
