About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking an experienced avionics packaging engineer for its Blue National Security (BNS) Core Systems and Components team. The role owns ruggedized avionics enclosures and mechanical systems from concept through flight release, protecting spacecraft electronics from thermal extremes, vibration, shock, radiation, electromagnetic interference, and vacuum. The engineer’s decisions will influence system reliability, vehicle integration, manufacturability, and mission success. The position involves developing protective mechanical systems for spacecraft avionics and collaborating with electrical, systems, thermal, structures, manufacturing, quality, and test engineers. The engineer will lead packaging assemblies through requirements, design, analysis, verification, qualification, release, and production support, while supporting environmental testing, supplier engagement, technical reviews, and the development of less-experienced engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 5 years designing electromechanical assemblies, avionics packaging, or comparable aerospace hardware.
  • Experience owning mechanical designs through the full lifecycle, from requirements through production support.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills and a solid command of GD&T and ASME Y14.5 drawing practices.
  • Experience integrating PCBAs, connectors, and cable/harness interfaces into mechanical assemblies.
  • Knowledge of ruggedized design, including thermal management, structural protection, vibration and shock survival, vacuum compatibility, and EMI/EMC shielding.
  • Experience running or directing thermal and structural analyses for electronic packaging.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, communicate technical risk clearly, and work cross-functionally.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, U.S. permanent residents, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as refugees or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with electronics thermal, structural, vibration, shock, or fatigue analysis; solder fatigue methods such as Steinberg or Engelmaier are a plus.
  • Finite element analysis experience, preferably with ANSYS.
  • Windchill or similar PLM/configuration-management experience.
  • Harness design and workmanship knowledge, including IPC-A-620.
  • Experience supporting environmental qualification or acceptance testing on aerospace or high-reliability hardware.
  • Background in spacecraft, human spaceflight, launch vehicle, or other extreme-environment hardware development.
  • Track record of mentoring junior engineers and leading design reviews.
  • Experience with Creo/Pro-E.

Responsibilities

  • Own complex avionics packaging assemblies, including enclosures, chassis, and mounting systems, across requirements, design, analysis, verification, qualification, release, and production support.
  • Partner with electrical, systems, thermal, structures, manufacturing, quality, and test engineers to develop integrated packaging solutions for PCBAs, connectors, and harnessing.
  • Drive thermal, structural, vibration, shock, and fatigue analyses.
  • Lead trade studies balancing mass, thermal and structural performance, EMI/EMC protection, manufacturability, cost, schedule, and risk.
  • Deliver models, drawings, specifications, interface control documents (ICDs), and configuration-controlled release packages, applying GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Shape environmental test campaigns, including planning, hardware preparation, data review, anomaly investigation, root-cause analysis, and verification closeout.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers and lead design reviews.
  • Engage suppliers on design changes and configuration management.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Paid time off of up to four weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on role type, job level, and other factors.
