About The Position

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking an experienced Avionics Engineer for a full-time research faculty position within the Applied Systems Lab (ASL), Autonomy Technology Transition Division (ATTD). ATTD focuses on autonomous uncrewed aircraft programs for sponsors across the Department of Defense, with expertise in autonomous systems, systems engineering, avionics engineering, embedded software development, and various test and evaluation environments. The Avionics Engineer will define and design military avionic systems and systems-of-systems, including integrated system-level designs and hardware/software subsystem designs for functions such as navigation, tactical data links, electronic warfare, and data fusion. This role involves integrating these systems within aircraft and with other aircraft and ground systems, applying knowledge of aircraft safety, security, robustness, and performance. The engineer will analyze laboratory and flight test data, provide technical leadership, and utilize tools like Model Based System Engineering, laboratory analysis hardware, software development environments, and Agile methodologies throughout the full development lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with Linux and embedded systems.
  • Experience leading teams developing complex, software-intensive, systems using system engineering processes and methodologies.
  • Experience designing/developing software-based systems that integrate multiple subsystems, and/or integrate multiple software applications and hardware.
  • Experience integrating and troubleshooting systems to determine functional correctness, completeness, and/or effectiveness.
  • Experience developing, integrating, and/or testing unmanned autonomous robotic system capabilities.
  • U.S. Citizenship required due to research contracts with the U.S. federal government.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Experience technically leading multi-disciplined (System Engineers, Software Engineers, Test Engineer) project teams.
  • Experience processing and analyzing data with tools such as Python or R.
  • Experience with avionic data buses (e.g., MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, Ethernet, RS-422, etc.), tactical data links (e.g., Link-16), military radios, and open systems architecture frameworks (e.g., FACE™ and OMS/UCI).
  • Experience using Model-Based System Engineering (SysML) to design systems (e.g., use cases, behavior, interfaces, data models).
  • Additional DoDAF experience is a plus.
  • Experience working in a full-lifecycle agile and/or digital engineering environment.
  • Experience supporting field tests to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Experience designing secure and safe system solutions.
  • Experience developing/designing complex, software-intensive, military unmanned air systems (UAS) using system engineering processes and methodologies.
  • Experience developing autonomous unmanned aircraft systems (UAS/UAV).
  • Experience developing autonomous unmanned surface vehicles (USV), unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), unmanned underwater systems (UUV).
  • Experience with Modular Open System Approach (MOSA).
  • Knowledge of the operational use models of military UAS.
  • Knowledge of FAA and Military regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all technical aspects of product or system design, including directing multiple lab resources for large-scale product or system deployments.
  • Manage sub-contractor resources supporting all system engineering areas (e.g., definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis, and implementation).
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis, translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of high complexity.
  • Define/refine internal and external system interfaces.
  • Support development of product strategy and execution.
  • Develop and review technical reports, specifications, test plans, memos, and diagrams detailing product or system attributes.
  • Lead medium-to-large project tasks and/or small programs and provide technical status and plans to Project Director.
  • Serve as a resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for avionics engineering tools and technologies.
  • Significantly contribute to whitepapers and proposals.
  • Develop and integrate new capabilities and subsystems into military systems, including the design of inter-software interfaces, inter subsystem interfaces (e.g., data, interconnects, messaging, middleware), aircraft to subsystem integration, pilot vehicle interface and test/instrumentation systems integration.
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems including keeping up to date on use cases, system capabilities, system interfaces, engineering tools, and road maps for current and future updates.
  • Serve as a technical expert for a specific engineering specialty (e.g. safety engineering, hardware/software interface, digital engineering).
  • Isolate hardware and software component anomalies.
  • Analyze flight and laboratory data to ensure system requirements are satisfied.
  • Develop scripts and tools to analyze flight and laboratory data.
  • Ensure that all technical work is developed to meet military, safety, and security standards.
  • Design and manage the laboratory configurations for assigned projects.
  • Lead cross-discipline project teams.
