About The Position

This temporary, part-time position supports student achievement by providing AVID tutors to work with intermediate grade-level students and serve as excellent role models of motivated, organized, successful college students who believe that AVID students can and will succeed. They must be enrolled in college or university and should represent balanced academic backgrounds. This position works in a supportive manner with students in the AVID program and are able to understand the delicate position they occupy. The AVID tutors are advocates of students, yet ultimately they are responsible to the teacher. They must be willing to meet regularly to discuss student progress and to confer with the teacher about future plans. Typical positions work two or three days per week, with varied hours. Rate of pay is $16.90 per hour. Per Education Code 45256, this position is not entitled to fringe benefits or holiday pay.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of two years of higher education study (48+ units), OR Possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, OR Successful completion of our academic proficiency assessment that demonstrates knowledge of, and the ability to, assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics or mathematics readiness.
  • Official college transcripts must be attached to the application to validate the degree awarded or completion of 48+ college units.
  • If official transcripts are not attached to the application, you will be required to take and pass the academic proficiency assessment.
  • Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
  • If no official transcripts are attached to the application, applicants will need to qualify via the academic assessment.
  • A valid picture identification is required prior to admittance.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor students in small study groups, assisting them in all subject areas based on the class and text notes they have collected in their AVID binders.
  • Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and text notes, book notes, etc.
  • Become familiar with the materials in the AVID libraries.
  • Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students.
  • Facilitate the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills, and other aspects of college preparation.
  • Conduct brainstorming and clustering sessions.
  • Contact teachers regarding course outlines and assignment schedules as directed by the AVID coordinator/teacher.
  • Communicate frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Attend tutoring training.
