About The Position

Kimley-Horn is seeking an Analyst to join their Reston, VA office, with a focus on Aviation Planning. This role involves supporting the development of aviation planning and strategy studies for state DOTs and airport clients. The position requires research, data collection, and analysis to inform planning recommendations and policy decisions. The analyst will also be responsible for preparing technical reports, memoranda, and presentation materials, and supporting project managers in task organization and deliverable tracking. Coordination with internal team members and external stakeholders, including state aviation agencies, airport sponsors, and industry partners, is essential. The role emphasizes proactive follow-through, clear communication of status updates, and contributing to a collaborative team environment while taking ownership of individual work products. Application of GIS and other analytical tools for planning and visualization is also part of the role.

Requirements

  • A Planning Degree (Bachelors or Masters) from an accredited program in City and Regional Planning, Urban Planning, Geography/GIS, Aviation, Transportation Planning, or Other Related Major.
  • 0–2+ years of experience in aviation planning, transportation planning, or a related field.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to develop clear, organized, and professional technical documents (writing sample required with application).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, follow through on assignments, and meet deadlines.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and accountability.
  • Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet client deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GIS (ArcGIS or similar) is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of aviation planning and strategy studies for state DOTs and airport clients, including state aviation system plans, aviation economic impact analyses, Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) planning initiatives, and airport business plans, master plans, and Airport Layout Plans (ALPs).
  • Conduct research, data collection, and analysis to inform planning recommendations and policy decisions.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and well-structured technical reports, memoranda, and presentation materials.
  • Support project managers in organizing tasks, tracking deliverables, and ensuring timely completion of assignments.
  • Coordinate with internal team members and external stakeholders, including state aviation agencies, airport sponsors, and industry partners.
  • Demonstrate strong follow-through by proactively closing the loop on assigned tasks and communicating status updates.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment while taking ownership of individual work products.
  • Apply GIS and other analytical tools (as applicable) to support planning and visualization efforts.
