About The Position

Neion Bio is seeking an adaptable and organized Avian Caretaker who is motivated by the ethical care of animals and will contribute to the growth of Neion’s research program. This role involves hands-on care and handling of chickens throughout their lifecycle, including hatching and breeding, as well as all aspects of husbandry in a research setting, from feeding to cleaning. This position requires one weekend day shift, as part of a 5-day work schedule, to ensure continuity of care.

Requirements

  • 2+ years experience providing hands-on animal care in a research, small animal clinical, farm or zoological setting is critical, including direct hands-on avian experience.
  • Prior experience incubating and hatching eggs and raising chickens would be beneficial.
  • Undergraduate or an associate degree in biological sciences or related fields, or equivalent industry experience.
  • This position requires showering into the facility, working in PPE for up to 3 hours at a time, and frequently moving equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Extreme attention to detail is critical, as well as strict compliance with SOPs and are followed and documented.
  • Ability to operate with quiet confidence and competence, individually and as part of a team to promote a culture of care.

Responsibilities

  • Safely handling chickens in a research setting.
  • Working with small flocks at all stages of development from egg collection, incubation and the successful hatching and growth of chicks and chickens.
  • Showering into the facility, and working in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and observing strict standard operating protocols (SOPs) to protect avian health.
  • Daily husbandry, including operating cage wash, cleaning bedding, replacing feed and water, and providing enrichments.
  • Regular heavy lifting.
  • Ensuring the health and environmental, nutritional and social enrichment of our flocks.
  • Maintaining timely and accurate animal records.
  • Helping to ensure that research areas and records meet and exceed IACUC inspection compliance.
