About The Position

The Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) is seeking an Autopsy Technician to join their team. OMI, a special program within the Department of Pathology at The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, investigates sudden, violent, untimely, or unexpected deaths across New Mexico to determine the cause and manner of death and provide formal death certification. The Autopsy Technician will assist pathologists with evidence collection and the examination of decedents. This role requires a strong work ethic, the ability to follow complex instructions, and comfort working in a laboratory setting with adherence to sanitation, infection control, and safety protocols. The position also involves data entry and requires a high degree of attention to detail. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills and emotional resilience. This role is physically demanding, requiring strenuous work such as lifting, pushing, or pulling objects over 300 pounds. The environment may involve exposure to toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, blood-borne pathogens, and noxious odors. OMI is a 24/7 facility, and this position is unionized with a schedule determined by bid. Work on holidays and weekends is required.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Successful completion of at least 3 credit hours of college-level coursework related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
At least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
An additional 4 months of directly related experience may be substituted for successful completion of at least 3 credit hours of college-level coursework related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Responsibilities

Assist pathologists with the collection of evidence and the examination of decedents.
Provide and/or oversee technical morphology laboratory services for hospital, forensic, or anatomical autopsy cases.
Support pathologists and other technical staff.

Adhere to protocols for sanitation, infection control, and safety.
