About The Position

As an Autonomy & Active Safety Engineering Intern in Summer 2027, you will work alongside Oshkosh engineers to develop, integrate, and demonstrate next-generation autonomy, robotics, perception, and vehicle control technologies on real vehicle platforms. Depending on your background, interests, location, and project assignment, your work may focus on areas such as computer vision and machine learning, perception and sensor fusion, localization and mapping, planning and controls, embedded systems, vehicle integration, simulation, or full-stack robotics development. Throughout the internship, you will gain hands-on engineering experience while developing an understanding of Oshkosh’s products, customers, technologies, values, and processes. Interns have the opportunity to own meaningful technical projects while receiving mentorship, training, and opportunities to connect with engineering professionals across the organization. Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field
  • At least sophomore standing for undergraduate students at the time of application
  • Programming experience with Python, C/C++, or a similar programming language through coursework, research, personal projects, or previous work experience
  • Ability to work at least 12 weeks, beginning in late May or early June through August

  • Experience or interest in ROS2 and Linux-based robotics development
  • Experience or interest in embedded software development or microcontrollers

  • Experience or interest in vehicle networks such as CAN
  • Experience or interest in vehicle powertrain, braking, or steering systems
  • Experience or interest in control systems
  • Experience or interest in sensor integration, including cameras, LiDAR, radar, or GPS/IMU
  • Experience or interest in simulation and virtual development environments
  • Experience or interest in hands-on development, experimentation, and testing with real systems
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work through ambiguity

Responsibilities

  • Owning an impactful technical project related to autonomy, active safety, robotics, perception, embedded controls, or vehicle systems
  • Developing, integrating, testing, and demonstrating your work on real vehicles, test benches, or simulation environments
  • Developing and evaluating computer vision and machine learning capabilities such as object detection, tracking, and vision-language models
  • Integrating sensors and computing platforms, including cameras, LiDAR, radar, GPS/IMU, and high-performance edge computing hardware
  • Supporting embedded vehicle control and unmanned vehicle systems development for autonomy and active safety applications
  • Developing or testing software using Python, C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink, or other engineering tools
  • Working with vehicle networks and systems such as CAN, powertrain, braking, and steering
  • Collaborating with engineers across software, systems, controls, electrical, mechanical, and hardware disciplines to integrate individual capabilities into larger vehicle systems
  • Evaluating emerging technologies and state-of-the-art approaches alongside proven commercial solutions for real-world applications
  • Performing engineering calculations, analysis, design, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Presenting project results and technical recommendations to engineering teams and project stakeholders
