About The Position

Perform preventative and emergency maintenance and repair of various district vehicles and equipment in accordance with established priorities, policies and guidelines. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as, district policies procedures and regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); possess a certificate of approved automotive mechanic training course or six (6) months experience evaluating, maintaining, and repairing automobiles and/or buses; familiarity with the use of common automotive hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Must have a valid Texas or New Mexico driver’s license and be able to obtain a Texas or New Mexico Non-Excepted Interstate Commerce Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class “A” or “B” within 60 days of employment.
  • Ysleta ISD Transportation will assist with the “P” and “S” endorsements which must be acquired within 60 days of obtaining a CDL.
  • Must be insurable by the district’s automobile liability insurance carrier and subject to the district’s alcohol and drug testing policy.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot vehicles brought in for repair to determine the cause of problems as well as parts and time needed for repair.
  • Perform routine maintenance on vehicles in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Perform other trade works as it relates to repairing vehicles or equipment (i.e. welding, glazier work, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, upholstery, tire repair and automotive body repair).
  • Work on automotive suspension systems, various brake systems, LP1 propane engine fuel systems and heating & cooling systems.
  • Work on different types of engines (gasoline, diesel and propane) and various types of systems (hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic).
  • Work with various types of equipment and systems associated with children with disabilities (i.e. child passenger restraints systems and wheelchair lifts).
  • Evaluate the mechanical condition of vehicles to determine if they are safe for use.
  • Inspect and road test vehicles prior to and after repairs have been made to assure quality diagnosis and repair.
  • Procure equipment/parts needed for repair.
  • Monitor inventory levels based on usage.
  • Follow the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations during routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Read/interpret blueprints, schematics, specifications and wiring diagrams to trouble shoot and repair equipment.
  • Work with various automotive diagnostic tools, equipment and software.
  • Be available to work various shifts and respond to service calls.
  • Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.
  • Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
  • Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.
