About The Position

Are you an experienced Automotive Technician looking to build a stable career with exceptional benefits? As an Automotive Technician with our Fleet Operations Division, you will join a team of highly trained, certified professionals responsible for maintaining and repairing more than 1,100 County-owned vehicles. Our diverse fleet supports administrative staff, EMS, Sheriff’s Office, emergency response teams, and numerous service departments. In this role, your expertise will help ensure vehicle reliability, maximize uptime, and support vital County operations. You will apply your diagnostic and mechanical repair skills to perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot complex vehicle systems, and provide high-quality service for our customers. You’ll work alongside supportive coworkers and supervisors who value collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement. All Fleet Operations positions are designated as essential. Employees are required to report during adverse weather or emergency situations to ensure critical equipment and services remain operational. Because this is a safety‑sensitive role, a pre‑employment drug test and participation in the County’s random drug testing program are required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in automotive maintenance
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of Automotive Experience including Diagnostic Skill level
  • At least 2 ASE Certifications or completed within first year of employment.
  • Proven background in automotive diagnostics and repairs.
  • Show past and continued interest in training, education, and development of your skills.
  • Formal Automotive Instruction.
  • Possession of a NC State Inspector & Emission license.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform accurate troubleshooting using diagnostic scan tools, multimeters, and OEM repair information systems.
  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance principles and the ability to maintain detailed, compliant service documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform automotive repairs including tire replacement, oil changes, bulb replacement, battery service, and brake repairs.
  • Utilize County-issued and personally owned tools as required to complete tasks.
  • Operate tools and equipment safely, independently, and efficiently.
  • Assist Senior Technicians with complex systems repairs such as engines, transmissions, HVAC, steering, electrical, body/chassis, exhaust, onboard diagnostics, and glass.
  • Assist in testing advanced electrical systems, emergency equipment, and diagnostic systems.
  • Apply workplace safety practices, including proper PPE usage, in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Use computers and software applications to document time, materials, and work performed.
  • Demonstrate integrity, ethical conduct, and adherence to County policies.
  • Follow detailed instructions and apply sound judgment in daily tasks.
  • Provide excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal support to peers and customers.
