About The Position

The City of Savannah Fleet Services Department has an opportunity for an Automotive Service Mechanic B (Diesel). This role is responsible for the repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment. The position offers competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package.

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) with five current NIASE certifications from the approved department list and four years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience or three years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience with the City of Savannah Vehicle Maintenance Department; or
  • High school diploma or GED with four current NIASE certifications from the approved department list and five years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience or four years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience with the City of Savannah Vehicle Maintenance Department; or
  • High school diploma or GED with three current NIASE certifications from the approved department list and six years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience or five years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience with the City of Savannah Vehicle Maintenance Department; or
  • High school diploma or GED with two current NIASE certifications from the approved department list and seven years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience or six years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience with the City of Savannah Vehicle Maintenance Department; or
  • High school diploma or GED with no current NIASE certifications from the approved department list and nine years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience or seven year of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience with the City of Savannah Vehicle Maintenance Department; or
  • No high school diploma or GED and no current NIASE certifications from the approved department list and ten years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience or eight years of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance experience with the City of Savannah Vehicle Maintenance Department.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state Commercial Driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Some assignments may require a valid state Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving history or must obtain CDL within six months of employment.
  • Knowledge of shop safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in the diagnosis and repair of equipment failures.
  • Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the interpretation of manuals and schematics.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Opens, closes, and updates work orders.
  • Ensures that repairs are performed to specifications.
  • Performs service calls in the field.
  • Prioritizes and schedules maintenance.
  • Performs initial inspections.
  • Assists others with complex repairs and diagnosis.
  • Reads and interprets repair manuals and schematics.
  • Diagnoses and repairs electronic engines, heavy equipment, specialized equipment, electronic transmissions, antilock braking systems, electrical systems, multiplex systems, air conditioning and heating systems, steering systems, fuel systems, and suspensions.
  • Rebuilds and repairs fire pump transmissions, fire truck valves, water pumps, transfer cases, differentials, brakes, power steering boxes, and engines.
  • Performs failure analysis.
  • Repairs tires.
  • Installs after-market accessories.
  • Assist master welder by providing minor to intermediate welding, fabrication and cutting jobs.
  • Works in a team effort to help the maintenance and service operations become successful.
  • Maintains record of repairs to vehicles by posting data into the fleet management software.
  • Adheres to safety guidelines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
