About The Position

This is a unique opportunity for an Automotive Service Manager to take full ownership of a service department at a luxury dealership. Unlike roles with extensive layers of process and approval, this position offers direct authority and decision-making power, reporting directly to the owner or dealer principal. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, technically proficient, and capable of managing all aspects of the department, from writing repair orders and dispatching work to managing parts, coordinating transport, and developing technicians. This role is suited for an individual who thrives on autonomy and wants their judgment to be the final word in a high-volume, complex automotive environment.

Requirements

  • Previous management or operational experience in a luxury or high-line independent automotive service department.
  • Ability to independently write, dispatch, and close repair orders.
  • Technical credibility; technicians should seek your expertise for complex issues.
  • Excellent communication and client-facing skills, capable of building rapport with discerning customers.
  • A hands-on, small-team oriented approach, preferring to be involved in the work rather than solely delegating.
  • Experience working with factory warranty portals and technical bulletins.
  • Proficiency in parts sourcing and lead-time management.
  • Experience coordinating transportation and managing sublet services.

Responsibilities

  • Write repair orders and handle client interactions directly, acting as the primary service advisor for most vehicles.
  • Dispatch every job based on technician skill and vehicle complexity, rather than a fixed rotation.
  • Perform pre-purchase inspections, PDI, track prep, storage and wake-up services, and seasonal/annual maintenance.
  • Manage factory warranty portals and technical bulletins, ensuring clean claims and avoiding chargebacks.
  • Source parts and manage lead times, especially for components that are not readily in stock.
  • Coordinate transportation and manage outsourced sublet work for paint, glass, wheels, and upholstery.
  • Focus on technician development, department gross profit, and effective labor rate.
  • Make decisions regarding goodwill repairs, technician assignments, department purchasing, staffing, and scheduling.
  • Set and maintain high standards for vehicle service and client satisfaction, particularly for high-value vehicles.
