The automotive mechanical design engineer manages product revisions and new products from concept to production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited school.
  • 3-5 years of experience working for an automotive OEM, Tier 1, or Tier 2 supplier. Other automotive experiences, such as military job functions or non-OEM job functions, may be considered.
  • Experience designing automotive mechanical components with consideration for DFA, DFM, and DFMEA, and serviceability.
  • Familiarity with low volume prototyping materials and manufacturing processes used to create uniform and non-uniform thickness plastics and metals.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers, in-house manufacturing, purchasing, quality engineering, and manufacturing engineering.
  • Able to design parts and assemblies in Catia V5. Surface design experience is desirable.
  • Experience using 3DExperience or Aras Innovator.
  • Effective and appropriate verbal and written communicator.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the accuracy and repeatability of product manufacturing.
  • Demonstrate depth of hands-on expertise in a particular vehicle system.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of all automotive systems.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiar with Smartsheet
  • Comfortable using a wide variety of automotive and non-automotive specific hand tools and power tools such as grinders and drills.

  • Surface design experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Ownership of the cost, quality, and performance of purchased and build-to-print vehicle components includes: Material selections, manufacturing process selections, and supplier vetting. Packaging and aesthetic considerations. Assembly process feasibility studies. Analysis of variable cost, tooling, and development costs.
  • Coordinate and confirm expected performance metrics.
  • Determine and execute testing and validation required to confirm packaging, function, and at the component and system levels.
  • Manage and document multiple projects effectively.
  • Present concise research results and documentation where applicable.
  • Communicate and collaborate with production teams regarding process changes, part changes, fixtures and tools changes, and schedules.
  • Understand and apply knowledge of materials and processes relevant to low volume production and prototyping.
  • Set specifications and apply appropriate dimensions and GD&T to parts and assemblies.
  • Interface with suppliers to ensure quality and compliance.
