About The Position

This is journey level mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of diversified, light automotive equipment. An employee in this classification shall perform diagnostic repair and preventative maintenance work on motorcycles, automobiles, light duty trucks, and other specialized automotive equipment employed in grounds maintenance work. An employee in this classification must be able to conduct and perform all types of diagnostics and preventative maintenance activities on automotive equipment. Work is subject to review while in progress and upon completion. Employees in this class may supervise the work of a small number of Automotive Mechanic Helpers assisting in repair or service work. Positions in this class differ from those in the class of Helpers because of the higher skill level and experience required and the greater variety of duties performed. This position reports to the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor or higher level position.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 60 college credits, completion of a training program at high school or vocational level in the area of Automotive Mechanics with a minimum number of 1,080 clock hours OR ASE certificates OR Automotive Manufactures certificates in varied automotive repair specialties (preferably within a 5 year period) and two (2) years experience performing a variety of automotive repairs.
  • A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Human Resources and must be maintained valid throughout employment in the classification.
  • Proof of education in the form of: transcripts indicating a minimum of sixty (60) college credits or higher. from accredited US college or university. OR completion of a training program at high school or vocational level in the area of Automotive Mechanics with a minimum number of 1,080 clock hours. OR ASE certificates or Automotive Manufactures certificates in varied automotive repair specialties.
  • Foreign diplomas/degrees must be submitted with a credential evaluation report from an approved credential evaluation agency.
  • If degree/diploma does not reflect the academic major on its face, transcripts indicating degree completion must be submitted.
  • Applicants must submit proof of qualifying education, such as an accredited high school diploma or its equivalent, degree seeking credits, or college/university degree or transcripts explicitly outlined in this job announcement.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and determines cause of malfunctioning motor vehicles including but not limited to: electronic ignitions, computer diagnosis, fuel systems, engine internals, engine drive trains such as transmission malfunctioning and rear end problems; reviews electrical diagrams and schematics to trouble shoot A.B.S, S.I.R systems and electrical shorts.
  • Diagnoses of brake systems and related equipment including but not limited to: replacement of brakes pads and shoes, calipers and cylinders, master cylinders, hoes, booster, ABS pump modulator, resurface drums and rotors, bleed systems and adjustments of emergency brake and other brake components; operations of various types of emissions gas analyzers.
  • Diagnoses and repairs cooling systems and related system components; front end alignment machines; major engine rebuilding of all type gasoline and/or diesel engines and minor engine repairs; removal and replacement of drive train to include removal and replacement of transmission, fly wheel, torque converter and all related equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs fuel system, performs pressure test and injector cleaning; repairs and/or replaces air conditioning systems, operates both R134a and R12 equipment, converts R12 equipped vehicles to R134a.
  • Performs preventative maintenance activities on all type automotive vehicles including but no limited to replacement of all filters, oil change, lube front end, checking of all brakes; replacement of tires, balancing and rotating; service transmissions, a/c; checks, charges and replaces batteries, general all around preventative maintenance activities.
  • Operates wrecker.
  • Makes service calls on disabled City vehicles.
  • Conducts road tests to locate defects in operations and as a check on repair work before the return of equipment to active use.
  • Uses a variety of common testing devices, such as ammeters, volt meters, analyzers and other gauges of various sorts, including computerized engine analyzers.
  • May perform light welding and machine work incidental to completion of repair assignments.
  • May occasionally utilize area specific software subsequent to training.
  • Performs other related work as required.
