About The Position

Under direction, is responsible for supervising the work of employees performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on a diversified fleet of cars, trucks, and other similar equipment; performs related duties as required. This role involves supervising employees performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on diversified motor vehicles and heavy equipment, including performance appraisals, leave requests, and initiating disciplinary recommendations. The supervisor plans the flow of work, makes assignments, and oversees activity on the repair floor to ensure smooth shift transitions. Responsibilities include inspecting and testing equipment, supervising record maintenance, preparing reports, training employees on procedures, using computer software as a diagnostic tool, initiating and updating work orders, communicating with customers about servicing needs, requisitioning parts and supplies, maintaining parts inventory, instructing mechanics on difficult repairs, and estimating repair costs. The role may also involve visiting accident scenes to determine damage and obtain repair estimates.

Requirements

  • Completion of the twelfth school grade
  • Two (2) years of experience supervising automotive mechanics
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Successfully complete all phases of the testing process
  • Multiple-choice exam covering Supervision, Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Logic and Reasoning, Mechanical Repair, Safety, Manual Parts Look-Up, and Microsoft Outlook 2016/2019
  • Training and Experience Evaluation

  • Some positions may require possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes by the completion of the probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises employees performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on diversified motor vehicles and heavy equipment, to include performance appraisals, leave requests, and initiating disciplinary recommendations
  • Plans the flow of work within the crew and makes general and detailed assignments to subordinates
  • Oversees activity on the repair floor and ensures a smooth shift transition
  • Inspects, tests, and road checks equipment to determine the nature of defects and failures and as a review of the work of mechanics and service workers
  • Supervises the maintenance of records of work performed and prepares reports of repair work undertaken and completed
  • Trains and ensures employees follow proper work and safety procedures, equipment usage, and operating procedures
  • Uses computer software applications as a diagnostic tool
  • Operates a computer to initiate and update work orders and complete reports
  • Communicates daily with customers regarding automotive/truck servicing needs
  • Requisitions repair parts, fuel, lubricants, supplies, and equipment; maintains parts inventory
  • Instructs mechanic when unusually difficult mechanical repair problems arise
  • Estimates cost of repair work
  • May visit the scene of accidents involving City equipment to determine the cause and extent of damage and, where it seems desirable, secures estimates on repair jobs from dealers and operators of privately owned shops
