About The Position

Under general supervision, the position performs skilled mechanical work troubleshooting and repairing a diversified fleet of trucks, automobiles, construction equipment, specialized equipment such as fire pumpers and refuse packers and non-automotive equipment. This role involves performing skilled mechanic duties including troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing gasoline and diesel powered automotive, heavy duty, and light construction equipment. The mechanic will inspect, diagnose, repair, and adjust various systems on light and heavy duty equipment and vehicles, including computer control systems, fuel injection, anti-lock brakes, electrical, hydraulic, air conditioning, fuel management, transmissions, steering, suspension, clutches, and engine sensors. The position also includes overhauling and repairing engines, grinding valves, setting tappets and push rods, replacing bearings, inspecting and repairing transmissions, universal joints, and differentials, balancing and aligning wheels, and replacing and adjusting brakes. Road testing vehicles is also a key responsibility. The mechanic will perform routine preventive maintenance, overhaul and repair engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, distributors, and pumps. Diversified electrical work on automotive equipment, including installing batteries, repairing lights, replacing alternators, repairing generators and starters, ignition systems, and high voltage power generators is expected. The role also involves repairing and replacing drive shafts, universal joints, and performing front-end work such as alignment and installing ball joints and tie-rod ends. Complete tune-ups using the latest testing equipment to locate problems, and installation and adjustment of snow removal, salt, and sand spreader equipment are also part of the duties. The mechanic will install various accessory parts and equipment, read and interpret complex schematics, service manuals, and manufacturer instructions. Road tests will be performed to locate defects and check repair work. The position requires operating various shop equipment such as hoists, jacks, welders, torches, plasma cutters, and tire equipment. Maintaining the shop in a clean and orderly fashion, including clean-up of fluid spills, and maintaining routine shop records are also required. The position may also perform some welding tasks using mig, tig, stick, and gas welding.

Requirements

Requires knowledge, skills and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school or GED with additional courses in the servicing and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of methods, materials and tools of the automotive mechanic trade.
Skill in operating various automotive repair tools and diagnostic equipment such as welding equipment, wheel balancing equipment, drill press, grinder, hydraulic press, battery charger, pressure cleaner, etc.
Knowledge of modern tools and machines used in testing and repairing motor vehicles.
Knowledge of the principles of operation of gas and diesel engines and the repair and maintenance characteristics of a variety of automotive and construction equipment.
Knowledge of the principles of heavy duty truck drive train, suspension and steering.
Skill in operating various automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks, mechanical equipment and other gasoline and diesel driven motors such as automobiles, service trucks, forklifts, back hoe, fire trucks, dump trucks, etc.
Knowledge of electrical equipment, components, instruments and systems including their design, installation, testing, uses repair or maintenance.
Knowledge of welding principles and techniques.
Knowledge of hazardous materials and waste and their uses, interactions, dangers, production, handling, storage and disposal.
Ability to read and understand automotive service manuals.
Requires servicing, maintenance and repairs at a production rate equal to greater than Division or industry standards.
Requires the ability to diagnose and repair computer controlled vehicles and equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned.
Must also be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day if necessary.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Requires knowledge of the geographical area in the City of Rock Island.
Requires ability to operate vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices.
Requires ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement or equivalent upon application or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days from hire date.
Requires three (3) years previous experience from an accredited automotive garage in the repair and maintenance of automotive, truck or heavy equipment systems; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Requires possession of all mechanics tools normally used in the servicing, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

Performs functions of an Automotive Mechanic I.
Performs skilled mechanic duties involving troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing gasoline and diesel powered automotive, heavy duty and light construction and other power driven equipment.
Inspect, diagnose, repair and adjust a variety of systems on light and heavy duty equipment and vehicles including computer control systems, fuel injection systems, anti-lock brake systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, fuel management systems, transmissions, steering and suspension components, clutches and engine sensors.
Overhauls and repairs gasoline and diesel engines, grinds valves, sets tappets and push rods, replaces bearings; inspects and repairs transmission universal joints and differentials; balances and aligns wheels, replaces and adjusts brakes; road tests vehicles.
Inspect motorized and mechanical equipment; diagnose problems and determine extent of necessary repairs; performs routine preventive maintenance.
Overhaul, repair and adjust engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, distributors and pumps.
Performs diversified electrical work on automotive equipment such as installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, replacing alternators, repairing generators and starters, ignition systems and high voltage power generators.
Diagnose and repair front and rear axles, drive train components, belts, gears and chain drives; repair and balance tires, align wheels.
Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts.
Tune-up engines by replacing ignition parts, recondition and adjust carburetors, fuel injection systems and propane fuel systems; repair and maintain emission control systems.
Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for automotive and heavy duty equipment; perform minor body work repairs.
Operates diagnostic electronic testing equipment to analyze and repair mechanical malfunctions; performs non-routine repair tasks; may perform some welding tasks which require using mig, tig, stick and gas welding.
Repairs and replaces hydraulic systems in fire apparatus, refuse packers, loaders and snow moving equipment.
Performs diagnostic tests on air conditioning and heating units and makes repairs.
Repairs and replaces drive shafts and universal joints.
Performs front-end work which includes alignment, installing ball joints and tie-rod ends.
Performs complete tune-ups using the latest testing equipment to locate problems.
Installs and adjusts snow removal, salt and sand spreader equipment.
Installs a variety of accessory parts and equipment including lights, trailer hitches and generators.
Reads and interprets complex schematics, service manuals and manufacturer instructions.
Makes road tests to locate defects in the operation and as a check on repair work before returning equipment to active uses; uses a variety of common testing devices such as ammeters, voltmeters, diagnostic scanners, measuring instruments, computers, gauges of various sorts and other testing equipment.
Performs emergency road calls of disabled vehicles, diagnose operational problems and perform necessary repairs.
Operates various types of shop equipment such as hoists, jacks, welders, torches, plasma cutter and tire equipment.
Maintains the shop in clean and orderly fashion including clean-up of fluid spills.
Maintains routine shop records; such as detailed job repair and part orders.
Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the job.
Assists in the general maintenance and housekeeping of City owned property and buildings.
Complies with established safety standards and rules including the use of safety equipment, personal protective equipment and other devices and procedures necessary for protection.
