About The Position

This position will perform skilled work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, and other major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment. Field test vehicles. Repairs, changes and balances tires. Performs preventative maintenance, responds to emergency road service calls. Performs minor welding, paint and body repairs. Complies with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules and policies. Requirements

Knowledge of repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, small engines and heavy equipment
Knowledge of diagnostic equipment
Knowledge of the use of repair manuals
Knowledge of purchasing rules and regulations
Knowledge of all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies
Skills in the use of hand tools and mechanical equipment
Skills in replacing, repairing and installing various components and accessories such as radios, heaters, windshield wipers, etc
Skills in documenting work performed and materials used on work orders
Skills in performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and various equipment
Skills in customer service
Ability to operate motor vehicles
Ability to troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems
Ability to perform a variety of gasoline or diesel repair and maintenance
Ability to assist in body and fender repair work
Ability to lift 50 pounds, climb, squat, stoop, push, pull, crawl and bend
Ability to use appropriate safety equipment
Ability to work independently
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Ability to perform minor welding
Ability to operate and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections required on commercial motor vehicle (cmv) with gross vehicle weight (gw) of 26,000 lbs. or more after obtaining CDL Instructional Permit & License
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others
Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license
Obtain a Class "B" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position
Obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position
Three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation
Any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years
A suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years
A suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years
Register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query
Mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant
Meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11
Obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment
Attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position
Register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query
Have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy
Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, must be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.

Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency
Two (2) years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance
An additional year of experience, for a total of three (3) years of experience, in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.

Responsibilities

Performs skilled work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment.
Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed.
Repairs, changes, and balances tires on automotive and heavy equipment.
Performs preventative maintenance work to ensure that equipment is maintained and is in proper working order.
Performs periodic maintenance, repair, and preparation of seasonal equipment.
Responds to emergency road service calls and performs minor repairs to vehicles and equipment.
Cleans up after repairs and returns tools to their proper location.
Performs minor welding, paint and body repairs as needed.
Complies with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies.
Assists in the maintenance of proper documentation of all waste generation and disposal activities.
Elevates questions/items of concern to Shop Manager.
Submits requests for parts and supplies.
Responsible for properly tracking and reporting time charged on various work activities and completing shop work orders.
Instruct other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.
