About The Position

The Automation Training Technician designs, develops, and delivers automation and instrumentation training to support safe, reliable, and compliant operations. This role serves as a subject matter expert in PLC-based control systems, instrumentation, communications, and automation field devices. The technician partners with Operations, I&E, Safety, and leadership to build workforce competency.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated field experience with oil & gas automation systems, including PLC-based control and instrumentation
  • Ability to design and deliver effective training (classroom, hands-on, and/or digital learning) for technicians and operators
  • Working knowledge of PLC programming concepts and troubleshooting, plus basic integration with HMI/SCADA environments
  • Working knowledge of common instrumentation devices (e.g., pressure and level measurement) including calibration/verification
  • Understanding of industrial communications (e.g., Modbus, HART, Ethernet/radio networks) and basic network troubleshooting
  • Commitment to safe work practices, hazard recognition, and compliance in operational environments

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree, or higher, in Automation
  • 5+ years of automation experience, including PLC-based control systems in an operations environment
  • Experience developing automation/instrumentation training curriculum, competency programs, and maintaining training content updates
  • Experience creating CBT/e-learning content and delivering training on PLC change control and industrial communications (e.g., radios, gateways, network architectures)

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver instructor-led automation and instrumentation training (classroom and hands-on field learning)
  • Lead in-person training at field locations, training facilities, and operational hubs
  • Build and maintain PLC curriculum (logic fundamentals, I/O setup, troubleshooting, safe edits, and bypasses)
  • Train employees on integrating PLCs with HMIs, flow computers, and SCADA; reinforce change-management expectations
  • Develop training on instrumentation end devices (installation, calibration, verification, and troubleshooting) and end-to-end signal path
  • Train industrial communications/networking (e.g., Modbus, HART/wireless, industrial Ethernet, radios) and troubleshooting practices
  • Create and maintain computer-based training (CBT) modules; translate complex concepts into role-specific digital learning
  • Promote Automation safety and compliance; track training records/metrics and continuously improve based on field learnings and incident trends
