About The Position

The Automation Systems Technician position is to be the in-house resource for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the automated packaging systems. This role involves performing any and all tasks necessary to maximize efficiency and uptime of the automated packaging systems, including robots, leak detectors, and vision systems. The technician will set up equipment for robot automation packing, set up and maintain leak detectors and vision systems, and perform preventative maintenance on these systems. They will also set up new robot applications for automated packaging, troubleshoot in-process automation application issues, and support all safety policies and GMPs. Additionally, the technician will repair automation equipment as necessary, train production personnel in the operation of automation equipment, and perform general maintenance. Recommendations for case counts and packaging sizing to enhance the effectiveness of the automated packaging system will be made. The role also includes modifying software and programs as necessary for automated systems, setting up, troubleshooting, and debugging new automation applications, and advising set-up personnel on automation setups. Maintaining in-house expertise on automation issues and performing other duties as assigned are also key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and working with decimals.
  • Five (5) years of Industrial Maintenance experience or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • Basic electronic training in a formal atmosphere or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • Three (3) years of PLC experience.
  • Ability to speak, write, and read effectively.
  • Good comprehension skills at a normal business level.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to remember department and company policies and procedures, and recall multiple operations.
  • Ability to analyze and prioritize projects.
  • Ability to respond to instructions and follow through independently.
  • Ability to organize and plan daily activities.
  • Ability to make quick, precise, and good judgmental decisions based on current information and past experiences.
  • Ability to gather information quickly, communicate to others, and react in a timely manner.
  • Ability to respond in emergency situations with a cool head and direct to the appropriate person.

  • Ability to maintain ownership of responsibilities and support the quality system process.
  • Must be able to work twelve (12) hours per day with three 15 minute breaks and one 30 minute lunch.
  • Must be able to work overtime on very short notice.
  • Must be able to work safely in the vicinity of open flames, hot plastic, oil and metal (at approximately 350-380 degrees).
  • Possible exposure to dust and odors from various substances such as oil, molten plastics, degreasers and cleaning solvents.
  • Noise level is usually 90dB and above and requires ear protection.
  • Must be able to work around sharp edges of machinery and moving machine components.
  • Must wear rubber soled/steel toed shoes, ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, hard hat and forearm sleeves.
  • Ability to lift on an occasional basis anywhere from 10-50 lbs.
  • Ability to carry approximately 50 lbs. for a distance of 100 ft twice a day on the average.
  • Ability to push/pull a 1000 lb. robot cell on wheels from one end of the plant to the other.
  • Ability to stand on average 10 hours a day.
  • Ability to detect visual functioning problems with robots, conveyors and inspection aid equipment.
  • Ability to clearly distinguish shades in color.
  • Ability to hear and recognize various sounds such as emergency machine shutdown alarms.
  • Bending and twisting at a 90° angle will be required about 50% of the day.
  • Ability to read and understand all work procedures and instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair automated packaging systems.
