About The Position

Novelis is a global leader in aluminum recycling and rolling, providing sustainable aluminum solutions for aerospace, automotive, beverage packaging, and specialty markets. With headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, Novelis employs approximately 13,000 people across 32 operating facilities on four continents. The Molten Metal Process Engineering team in Spokane, Washington, is seeking an Automation Engineer to support Novelis sites and projects through remote assistance and onsite work. Travel to Novelis plants will be required. The position level will be determined by the candidate's experience, technical knowledge, and capabilities, with the scope and complexity of work aligning accordingly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent related field.
  • Ability to test and troubleshoot industrial hardware and software.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and work effectively both independently and in multi-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, maintain accurate technical documentation, and complete work with an appropriate level of supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to travel globally up to 25% annually.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with automation controls, PLC programming, or a related programming language.
  • Progressive industrial automation experience, including work in a manufacturing or process environment.
  • Strong ladder-logic PLC programming capability.
  • Working knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLC and FactoryTalk View systems.
  • Working knowledge of Siemens PLC, TIA Portal, and WinCC systems.
  • Working knowledge of Modicon PLCs and related automation systems.
  • Experience with industrial HMI or SCADA platforms such as Wonderware, iFix, or Ignition.
  • Experience independently troubleshooting unfamiliar or moderately complex automation problems.
  • Experience leading technical work, coordinating suppliers or stakeholders, or supporting commissioning and startup activities.
  • Knowledge of aluminum remelt, molten metal processing, rolled aluminum products, or related industrial processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, program, test, and troubleshoot PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems for industrial equipment.
  • Create and modify control logic using platforms such as Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 and, less frequently, Siemens TIA Portal.
  • Support plant troubleshooting, equipment upgrades, process improvements, and capital projects through remote and on-site work.
  • Commission automated systems, including design review, functional testing, issue resolution, startup support, and technical documentation.
  • Work with operations, engineering teams, project collaborators, and external suppliers during equipment design, testing, installation, and startup.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment while considering safety, operations, maintenance, technical performance, schedule, and cost.
  • Manage assigned work, communicate status and risks, and provide clear technical data, reports, recommendations, and documentation.
  • Contribute to site projects and regional or global initiatives. Depending on experience, assignments may include independently defining and leading moderately complex automation work.
  • Develop expertise in automation systems and remelt equipment. Experienced candidates may serve as a subject matter resource and provide technical guidance to engineers and site partners.
  • Follow Novelis safety requirements and use equipment in a safe operating manner.
