Automation Engineer

HUB InternationalChicago, IL
$110,000 - $135,000Hybrid

About The Position

HUB is seeking an Automation Engineer to join the RPA & Automation team within its centralized technology organization. This is a hands-on build role responsible for designing, developing, and supporting production-grade automations that deliver measurable operational value across HUB's business lines. The role is grounded in UiPath RPA development, with the opportunity to grow into adjacent tools on the HUB automation stack including Power Platform, Python, and AI-assisted development tooling. The ideal candidate is an experienced RPA developer who is curious about where automation is heading and ready to build across a broader engineering toolkit. HUB operates a large and growing production bot portfolio across claims processing, policy administration, financial reconciliation, compliance reporting, and regional operations. The Automation Engineer will contribute directly to the health, velocity, and quality of this portfolio by building resilient automations, supporting production stability, and helping evolve the team's engineering standards.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on RPA development experience, with UiPath as the primary platform
  • UiPath Developer certification (Advanced preferred, Associate acceptable at hire with path to Advanced)
  • Demonstrated experience building production-grade bots: exception handling, logging, error recovery, and multi-system integration
  • Working knowledge of SQL for data manipulation and validation within automation workflows
  • Experience working in an Agile delivery model
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field

Nice To Haves

  • Python proficiency for scripting, data manipulation, and API integration
  • Experience with REST APIs, webhook integrations, and modern integration patterns
  • Hands-on exposure to Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps)
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tooling in production work (Claude, UiPath Autopilot, Copilot)
  • Automation Anywhere or other RPA platform experience
  • Insurance or financial services industry experience
  • Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software engineering practices
  • Experience with backlog and delivery tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy production-grade automations, primarily on UiPath, across HUB business lines and regional operations
  • Build and maintain complex bot architectures including multi-system integrations, structured exception handling, retry logic, and recovery patterns
  • Translate business requirements and process documentation into well-architected technical solutions
  • Contribute to a reusable library of components, templates, and integration patterns that accelerate future delivery
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production bot failures with minimal downtime, working with analysts and architects to triage incidents
  • Participate in code reviews and uphold development standards across the automation codebase
  • Implement proper logging, audit trails, and compliance-ready documentation for every automation deployed
  • Monitor the stability of automations you own and drive continuous improvement against error rates, failure patterns, and maintainability
  • Work across the broader automation stack, including Power Platform workflows and Python-based scripting, to select the right tool for each use case
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tooling (Claude, UiPath Autopilot, Copilot) to accelerate build cycles and improve code quality
  • Build and consume APIs to extend automation beyond UI-level RPA where practical
  • Support the team's adoption of emerging capabilities including agentic automation patterns and process intelligence tools
  • Partner with Automation Product Analysts and business stakeholders to refine requirements, assess feasibility, and scope work
  • Support the Solution Architect in evaluating technical options and sizing automation candidates
  • Work within Agile ceremonies (standups, sprint planning, retrospectives) and contribute to team velocity and delivery commitments
  • Document automations, workflows, and technical decisions in a way that supports handoff, audit, and future maintenance

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary plus performance-based bonus
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Hybrid work arrangement based out of our Chicago office
  • Professional development and certification reimbursement
  • Opportunity to shape HUB's enterprise automation program and work across a modern automation stack spanning RPA, Power Platform, Python, and AI-assisted tooling
  • health/dental/vision/life/disability insurance
  • FSA, HSA and 401(k) accounts
  • paid-time-off benefits such as vacation, sick, and personal days
  • eligible bonuses, equity and commissions for some positions
