About The Position

The Automation Engineer is responsible for the performance of instrumentation, electrical, and automation maintenance and engineering functions in support of operating departments. This role provides engineering assistance and technical support while directly supervising the I/E group on a daily basis. The position involves the management of processes, procedures, and a combination of instrument, electrical, and automation activities to research, develop, design, test, and help maintain operating facilities.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in PLC logic and programming.
  • Expertise and proficiency with Microsoft Office and other basic office computer software.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to co-workers, supervisors and vendors.
  • Ability to read and comprehend work instructions, equipment manuals, safety procedures, electrical control diagrams, P&ID’s and PLC programming logic.
  • Must be motivated, well organized and demonstrate the ability to plan/prioritize work in a manner that ensures minimal disruption to operations, improved equipment and process reliability and cost effectiveness.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering or scientific discipline plus 2 years experience OR Equivalent combination of education, training and 5 years related experience.
  • Strong background in control systems and programmable logic controls (PLCs) are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD preferred.
  • Preferred background would include a mining or mineral processing environment involving dry solids processing and handling.
  • Kiln and mill operational experience preferred.
  • An understanding of ISO and Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) as it relates to I/E functions, preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in National Fire Protection Association/National Electrical Code (NFPA/NEC) Standards, and IEEE/IES/API Standards.
  • Working experience in NFPA70E administration.

Responsibilities

  • Automation and controls systems design, specification, programming, simulation and testing, and start-up assistance.
  • Management of the repair, installation, calibration, and preventative/predictive maintenance on a wide variety of electric, electronic, and pneumatic instruments and facility systems.
  • Supervision of facility’s electrical and instrument activities.
  • Application of design knowledge in power distribution, grounding, lighting, control systems, and equipment specification and selection.
  • Analysis of complex engineering problems and offering effective resolutions.
  • Management of existing electrical distribution systems and planning maintenance of these systems using recognized industry standards and specifications.
  • Performing system calculations and studies for electrical power systems, including load flow, voltage drop, motor starting, short circuit studies, and relay coordination studies.
  • Development of test requirements and assistance in electrical equipment checkout and startup.
  • Review and checking of all assigned project electrical installation drawings for compliance with all company and project instructions (One-line diagrams, electrical equipment location drawings, plan drawings, details, schematics, wiring diagrams, etc.) of technical vendor submittals for installation requirements.
  • Assistance in the development of project schedules and manpower requirements.
  • Review and checking of technical vendor submittals for installation requirements.
  • Management of the specification, development, installation, and validation of electrical and automation projects within budget and company guidelines.
  • Development and management of energy consumption metrics.
  • Overseeing contracts for power supply.
  • Development of a system to optimize energy consumption and provide production strategy input based on energy prices.
  • Development and maintenance of maintenance key performance indicators for equipment care and condition along with implementing best practices for electrical maintenance in the plants.
