About The Position

Albireo Energy is seeking an Automation Design Engineer to design, develop, and deliver automation and monitoring systems for mission-critical data center projects. This role spans Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), Building Management Systems (BMS), and SCADA platforms, covering the full project lifecycle from engineering design and documentation through control system development and field commissioning. This role balances automation development with hands-on design. You will be expected to keep up with design tasks on your projects, including producing and revising drawing packages in AutoCAD, alongside your SCADA, PLC, and commissioning responsibilities. You will report to the Engineering Manager as part of a central engineering team supporting strategic projects nationwide, collaborating closely with design leads, project managers, field execution teams, and our solutions architecture and sales teams. You will also work directly with customers, consultants, contractors, and equipment manufacturers. This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for an engineer who can take ownership of assigned design scopes, work independently, solve problems proactively, and grow into technical leadership. We actively support professional development, including Ignition certifications (Core and Gold) and hands-on PLC programming experience.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience in automation, controls, SCADA, or systems integration engineering.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience producing engineering drawings in AutoCAD, with the ability to independently create and revise control, wiring, and layout drawings.
  • Working knowledge of drafting principles, drawing standards, and revision control.
  • Hands-on experience integrating systems in Ignition or a comparable SCADA/HMI platform.
  • Experience reading, modifying, and troubleshooting PLC programs (Allen-Bradley/Studio 5000 preferred).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, BACnet, SNMP, EtherNet/IP).
  • Experience with full-lifecycle project delivery: design, development, testing, and commissioning.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort in client-facing settings.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-location, remote team using tools such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25–50%, with heavier periods during commissioning.

Nice To Haves

  • BS in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Computer, or Controls Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, including symbol libraries, wire numbering, and automated reports.
  • Experience creating or maintaining CAD standards.
  • Ignition Core Certification (Gold Certification a plus).
  • Data center, mission-critical, pharmaceutical, or other regulated-industry experience.
  • Experience with EPMS or BMS design and integration.
  • Experience with DCS platforms such as DeltaV, or with process controls.
  • Experience with Revit or other BIM tools.
  • Scripting experience (Python/Jython, SQL) for SCADA applications.
  • Familiarity with power meters and electrical distribution equipment (switchgear, UPS, PDUs, generators).
  • Experience with Autodesk Build, CxAlloy, or similar project and commissioning tools.
  • Experience supporting proposals or solutions development.

Responsibilities

  • Design and Documentation: Produce, revise, and maintain design drawings in AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical, including control panel layouts, wiring and termination diagrams, network riser diagrams, P&IDs, enclosure details, and installation details.
  • Keep design packages current throughout the project lifecycle, incorporating RFI responses, design changes, field redlines, and as-built conditions.
  • Apply and help improve company CAD standards, including title blocks, layers, symbol libraries, drawing numbering, and revision control.
  • Coordinate drawing updates with device lists, point lists, and BOMs to keep documentation consistent across the package.
  • Read and interpret customer specifications, electrical one-lines, mechanical drawings, and owner standards to define automation scope and system requirements.
  • Develop control system architectures and sequences of operation for EPMS, BMS, and SCADA systems, including mechanical cooling and electrical distribution monitoring.
  • Select and specify controllers, PLCs, power meters, gateways, sensors, transmitters, network switches, and related hardware.
  • Prepare submittal packages that clearly communicate system design and operation to customers, consultants, subcontractors, and field installation teams.
  • Coordinate with equipment manufacturers on communication maps, register lists, connection details, and design compatibility.
  • Follow internal workflows for drawing management, RFIs, and submittals in Autodesk Build, and contribute to project startup standards.
  • Development and Integration: Configure and develop SCADA/HMI applications in Ignition, including tag structures, UDTs, graphics, alarming, historian, trending, and reporting.
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC logic (Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 or similar) for data acquisition and automation sequences.
  • Integrate field devices and third-party equipment using Modbus TCP/RTU, BACnet, SNMP, EtherNet/IP, and other industrial protocols.
  • Apply OT networking and cybersecurity best practices, including VLANs, segmentation, and redundancy.
  • Testing and Commissioning: Develop test procedures and checklists for FAT, SAT, point-to-point verification, and Level 4/5 integrated systems testing.
  • Support field teams through installation, startup, commissioning, and cutover, both on site and remotely.
  • Track commissioning progress, device verification, and open issues using tools such as CxAlloy and Basecamp.
  • Contribute to MOP development for work performed in live, mission-critical environments.
  • Deliver as-built drawings, closeout documentation, and O&M materials.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Support solutions architects and sales with conceptual designs, scope reviews, and estimating.
  • Communicate progress, schedule risks, and design changes early to the design lead or project manager, along with recommended solutions.
  • Mentor junior designers and field technicians, and delegate tasks where appropriate.
  • Manage assigned scopes within budgeted hours and committed deliverable dates.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and electrical safety procedures, including NFPA 70E.
