Automation Analyst

Ally Logistics•Grand Rapids, MI

About The Position

The Automation Analyst conducts process discovery and builds, maintains, and measures automations. The role combines direct engagement with employees to understand how work is performed—including exceptions and workarounds—with hands-on delivery using workflow orchestration, RPA, scripts, integrations, and AI-assisted steps. The company has process discovery tooling and an existing portfolio of production RPA automations for the analyst to assess, improve, document, or retire, alongside a mandate to build new solutions. The analyst turns discovery findings into prioritized and quantified opportunities, writes requirements, and owns the reliability and adoption of solutions they deliver. They work with engineering on genuinely difficult problems, bring affected teams through change and training, and report outcomes against expectations. The position calls for practical AI coding-tool experience, analytical and technical fluency, curiosity about how work gets done, and willingness to maintain inherited automations.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience building and shipping automations, tools, scripts, or workflows that are used.
  • Regular, hands-on use of AI coding tools such as Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex to write and debug working code; ability to break down problems for models, assess their outputs, and recognize unreliable results.
  • Ability to run discovery sessions, elicit requirements, clarify vague complaints, define problems, and quantify them.
  • Technical fluency with REST APIs, JSON, webhooks, SQL, and scripting in Python or JavaScript; ability to read API documentation, authenticate, and move data without assistance.
  • Experience automating personal work through scripts, macros, or workflows.
  • Curiosity about how work is done and willingness to observe users directly.
  • Willingness to maintain and improve work built by others, including an existing RPA portfolio.
  • Ability to understand affected employees' concerns and obtain buy-in before changing how they work.
  • Ability to assess whether a process should be automated or instead eliminated or renegotiated.

Nice To Haves

  • Business process modeling experience, such as BPMN, at a practical level of detail.
  • Hands-on experience with workflow automation or iPaaS platforms.
  • RPA experience, particularly inheriting or auditing an existing bot portfolio.
  • n8n experience.
  • Experience building with LLM APIs, such as structured extraction, document processing, tool-using agents, or evaluation harnesses.
  • Familiarity with task or process mining tools and translating their output into action.
  • Formal continuous improvement background, such as Lean, Six Sigma, or value stream mapping.
  • Browser and UI automation experience with Playwright, Puppeteer, or Selenium.
  • Data experience beyond SQL, such as dbt, warehouse modeling, or BI tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Interview and observe employees performing their work; conduct discovery sessions, workshops, and walkthroughs to identify exceptions, workarounds, and edge cases.
  • Build and deliver working automations using workflow orchestration, RPA, scripts, integrations, and AI-assisted steps.
  • Engage engineering on problems that require deeper engineering support.
  • Turn process discovery findings into a prioritized, quantified backlog, including current costs, costs to address, and expected returns.
  • Understand and maintain the existing RPA portfolio; repair brittle automations, document undocumented ones, and retire those that no longer provide value.
  • Write user stories, acceptance criteria, exception paths, and failure modes.
  • Own reliability for delivered automations, including monitoring, error handling, and runbooks.
  • Manage change by bringing affected teams along, training them, and supporting adoption of new processes.
  • Measure delivered results against commitments and report outcomes honestly.
