About The Position

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking an experienced Software Testing Principal specializing in MUMPS to support testing and quality assurance for mission-critical healthcare applications in MUMPS/InterSystems Cache environments. The role supports modernization, system enhancements, healthcare interoperability initiatives, and production support for legacy healthcare systems. It is a 100% U.S.-based remote, W-2 position supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs. Candidates residing in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington will not be considered. U.S. citizenship is required, and candidates must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI). Selected applicants are subject to a government security investigation and must meet applicable eligibility requirements. The position develops and executes test plans, cases, scripts, and procedures; validates software releases, defect corrections, upgrades, data integrity, healthcare workflows, and system integrations; and performs functional, integration, regression, UAT, system, and end-to-end testing. It also supports interoperability testing using HL7, FHIR, and EDI standards, including participation in Beta/IOC testing with healthcare facilities and end users. The role analyzes defects and production incidents, helps verify fixes, reviews requirements for testability and coverage, and communicates testing metrics, risks, defects, and status. It provides technical guidance on testing strategies and contributes to continuous improvement of testing processes and quality standards. The role requires 10 or more years of software testing, quality assurance, or system validation experience and a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Healthcare Informatics, or a related field. Professional certifications are listed as not applicable. Advanced testing certifications, test automation, SQL/database validation, cloud healthcare application testing, DevOps/CI/CD, and modernization experience are desired.

Requirements

At least 10 years of software testing, quality assurance, or system validation experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Healthcare Informatics, or a related field.
U.S. citizenship is required.
Must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI).
Experience supporting healthcare, government, or other highly regulated environments.
Experience testing enterprise applications supporting clinical, benefits, or healthcare operations.
Experience supporting legacy applications and long-lived mission-critical systems.
Experience testing applications developed using MUMPS and/or InterSystems Cache.
Experience validating healthcare business workflows and system functionality.
Experience developing detailed test plans, test scenarios, test scripts, and test cases.
Experience performing functional, regression, integration, system, and user acceptance testing.
Understanding of the software development lifecycle and testing methodologies.
Experience validating database updates and data integrity.
Ability to analyze system logs, application errors, and test results to identify root causes.
Experience testing interfaces and system integrations.
Knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards, including HL7, FHIR, and HIPAA EDI transactions.
Experience validating EDI healthcare transactions, including 278 Prior Authorizations and 275 Attachments.
Experience using defect tracking and test management tools such as JIRA, Azure DevOps, HP ALM, and TestRail.
Experience creating testing metrics, dashboards, and status reports.
Strong documentation skills and knowledge of healthcare operational workflows.
Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
Experience supporting VistA environments and testing FileMan database functionality.
Understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance requirements.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work directly with business users and customers, independently prioritize multiple activities, and collaborate within cross-functional technical teams.

Nice To Haves

Deep hands-on EDIFECS experience with EDI X.12 standards and workflows, including medical claims transactions 837, 834, 835, and 277; 270/271 and 278/275 transactions; and 999 transactions.
Experience supporting VistA and FileMan applications.

Responsibilities

Support testing and quality assurance for mission-critical healthcare applications operating in MUMPS/InterSystems Cache environments.
Support modernization efforts, system enhancements, healthcare interoperability initiatives, and production support for legacy healthcare systems.
Develop and execute comprehensive test plans, test cases, test scripts, and test procedures.
Validate software enhancements, maintenance releases, defect corrections, and system upgrades.
Support functional, integration, regression, user acceptance, system, and end-to-end testing.
Verify data integrity across legacy healthcare applications, databases, interfaces, and external systems.
Test healthcare interoperability transactions using HL7, FHIR, EDI, and related standards.
Participate in Beta/IOC testing with healthcare facilities and end users, document results, and coordinate issue resolution.
Analyze and troubleshoot software defects, integration failures, and production incidents.
Collaborate with developers, business analysts, product owners, and end users to validate requirements and test objectives.
Develop test data and test environments that support healthcare workflows and business processes.
Execute manual and automated testing activities where applicable.
Track, document, and communicate testing metrics, defects, risks, and status reports.
Validate integrations involving VistA, FileMan, healthcare messaging platforms, and external partner systems.
Support root-cause analysis and verification of software fixes.
Review system requirements and technical specifications for testability and complete coverage.
Contribute to improvement of testing processes, procedures, and quality standards.
Provide technical leadership and guidance on testing strategies for healthcare and government systems.
