About The Position

The Automated Material Movement Engineer prepares stamping plants for the launch and integration of automated material movement technologies such as AFTs (automated fork trucks), AMRs (autonomous mobile robots), AGVs (automated guided vehicles), ARSs (auto racking systems), and ASRSs (automated storage and retrieval systems). You will work within a centralized Manufacturing Engineering team, exercising innovation, initiative, and independent judgment. In this role, you will lead automated material movement initiatives across all affected areas of the stamping plants, including processes, people, equipment, facilities, and funding. You will collaborate closely with Body Shop, Stamping Plants, Equipment teams, Containers, and ARC teams, coordinating across multiple groups to align responsibilities, ensure effective communication, and drive program success. You will also justify, obtain, and manage funding for top-priority projects. This role works autonomously with periodic guidance from leadership and has a significant impact on how stamping plants deploy and optimize automated material movement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Experience with autonomous material movement equipment for headcount reduction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain complex technical topics to a broad audience.
  • Ability to work in ambiguity, take initiative, and operate in a largely self-directed manner.
  • Experience coordinating material movement equipment deployments, preferably in automotive manufacturing facilities, including managing budget constraints and varying production schedules.

Nice To Haves

  • Work experience in sheet metal stamping manufacturing or similar manufacturing environments.
  • Master’s degree (technical discipline or MBA).
  • Broader manufacturing experience beyond a single area or plant.
  • Understanding of GM Financial processes and GM Financial investment classifications

Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation: Identify, prioritize, and drive closure of open issues related to the implementation of autonomous equipment in stamping.
  • Support deployments: Enable successful deployment of automated systems through structured problem-solving, cross-functional communication, and removal of roadblocks.
  • Optimize operations: Lead optimization of stamping plants in support of headcount reduction initiatives through automated material movement opportunities.
  • Manage funding and timing: Plan and manage funding and schedules for plant activities that support autonomous equipment deployments (AFTs, AGVs, ARSs, ASRSs, etc.).
  • Engage plants directly: Regularly travel to stamping facilities to meet with leadership, review progress, and support automated material movement deployments.
  • Define standards: Develop standards and specifications for equipment, containers, and processes used in autonomous material movement.
  • Leverage lessons learned: Collaborate with suppliers, plant personnel, Body Shop counterparts, ARC teams, and others to capture and apply lessons learned.
  • Benchmark and innovate: Investigate new technologies and benchmark internally and externally to implement best practices for automated material movement in stamping.
  • Manage multiple initiatives: Handle multiple assignments and deployments concurrently while maintaining quality and timing.
