About The Position

The purpose of the Journeyman / B level Technician is to have a highly trained and knowledgeable employee able to diagnose, inspect, repair, service, and overhaul vehicle problems and maintenance. All Journeyman Technicians must be able to demonstrate their physical and mental ability to perform services as well as detailed minor repairs. They must conduct every aspect of their job ethically. They must have the ability to explain the work needed to the service advisor/manager and to work well under pressure. All Journeyman Technicians must meet or exceed the standards set by the industry-recognized trade organizations. Journeyman Technicians are required to have all of the necessary hand tools needed to perform their duties efficiently. They must also have the ability and willingness to attend training classes. All Technicians must be able to work a minimum and produce a minimum of 40 hours per week regularly.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate physical and mental ability to perform services and detailed minor repairs.

  • ASE Certified within two years of being hired.
  • Complete master certification within four years of being hired.
  • Possess all necessary hand tools needed to perform duties efficiently.
  • Ability and willingness to attend training classes.
  • Work a minimum of 40 hours per week regularly.
  • Have a clear understanding of the customer complaint before performing diagnostic procedures.
  • Obtain necessary permission to perform work before starting diagnostics.
  • Ensure external service or adjusted repair cannot resolve the customer complaint before recommending teardowns, disassembly, or internal inspection.
  • Appropriately note and document all diagnostic procedures, findings, recommendations, and services performed.
  • Perform all adjustments, repairs, and services as outlined in a recognized, professional publication.
  • Return all replaced components to the customer when specified on the technician’s worksheet.
  • Save replaced components until the day after a vehicle is delivered when not specified.
  • Inspect and test drive all vehicles to assure the customer complaint has been alleviated.
  • Recheck all vehicles to ensure the service was done professionally and the vehicle has been cleaned and readied for customer delivery.
  • Procedure 8+ billable hours daily.
  • Follow procedure daily.
  • Clean up after themselves daily.
  • Keep shop equipment clean and in good working condition daily.
  • Use Mitchell Repair, All-Data software, and service and repair information daily.
  • Use Tekmetric software to research customer history daily.
  • Assist other technicians as needed daily.
  • Communicate needed upsells in a timely fashion, in clear writing (see tech worksheet procedure) daily.
  • Communicate with customers about specific problems/diagnoses with help from a service advisor/manager daily.
  • Clean tools and toolbox weekly.
  • Attend shop meetings as required weekly.
  • Thoroughly clean own service bay monthly.
  • Review goals with the supervisor/owner as outlined in the performance review quarterly.

  • Recommending teardowns, disassembly, or internal inspection only after ensuring external service or adjusted repair cannot resolve the customer complaint.
  • Noting and documenting all diagnostic procedures, findings, recommendations, and services performed in compliance with management procedures.
  • Performing all adjustments, repairs, and services as outlined in a recognized, professional publication.
  • Not recommending a minor service when a more severe condition exists or when a minor service may worsen a pre-existing condition or cause a mechanical failure.
  • Returning all replaced components to the customer when specified on the technician’s worksheet.
  • Saving replaced components until the day after a vehicle is delivered when not specified.
