About The Position

This position involves overhauling diesel engines and component assemblies used in diesel-powered vehicles under supervision. The role acts as a troubleshooter to identify mechanical defects, performing minor repairs in the field to enable vehicles to return to the garage under their own power. Responsibilities include overhauling diesel engines, transmissions, and fuel systems, aligning wheels, adjusting tracks, repairing steering equipment, and relining/adjusting brakes. The position may involve transmitting orders to other journeymen, supervising machinist helpers, automotive service workers, and other personnel, as well as training them in maintenance and repair tasks. Additionally, the role may include preparing reports, orders, and maintaining records and inventories of supplies and materials. Operating motor vehicles or equipment is also part of the duties. All Auto Mechanics (Diesel) perform related work.

Requirements

  • Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic specializing in automotive diesel engine repair work; or
  • Not less than two and one-half years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic specializing in automotive diesel engine repair work plus sufficient helper or apprentice experience or relevant education acquired in a college, university, technical school, trade school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience or relevant education. Less than a full year of helper or apprentice experience, or relevant education will receive prorated credit.
  • At the time of appointment candidates must possess a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York and a Learner's Permit for a Class B Commercial Driver License.
  • Appointees hired with a Learner's Permit must obtain the Class B CDL within six months of appointment.
  • The CDL, with no restrictions must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • At the time of appointment, certain agencies may require appointees to possess one or more of the following New York State Certifications: As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Light Vehicles, Group 1; As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Heavy Vehicles, Group 2; As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Motorcycles, Group 3; As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Light Vehicles Group 1 and As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Emissions, Group D; As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Heavy Vehicles Group 2, and As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Emissions, Group D; As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Light Vehicles, Group 1, and As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Emissions, Group D; As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Light Vehicles, Group I, and As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Heavy Vehicles, Group 2, and As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Motorcycles, Group 3, and As a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Emissions, Group D.
