The Audiology Assistant performs direct and indirect client care and non-client care activities that are delegated and supervised by the Audiologist. This role reports directly to the Manager, Provincial Outreach Therapy for Children-Jordan’s Principle. The position is based out of SSCY Centre in Winnipeg and provides audiological services to children and youth both at SSCY Centre and in First Nations communities. This is a 1-year full-time term position.

Requirements

  • Completion of Rehabilitation Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Basic computer skills and Medical Terminology required.
  • Strong English oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Accurate word processing; computer skills including Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel), etc.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to travel to provide audiological services in Manitoba.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to/use of a vehicle.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with infants/children in a health care setting preferred.
  • Experience working with communication disorders and deaf and hard of hearing people would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Performs direct and indirect client care and non-client care activities that are delegated and supervised by the Audiologist responsible for the care of clients.
  • Participates as a member of the Jordan’s Principle team and be responsible for performing audiological services as directed by the audiologist.
  • As part of the Jordan’s Principle team, the Audiology Assistant will consult with families and other team members and will demonstrate culturally safe practices.
  • The Audiology Assistant will also be responsible for the day administration functions required by the Audiology department.
  • Schedules appointments with families and makes necessary travel arrangements.
  • Assists the Audiologist during hearing evaluations of children and youth who may be difficult to test children using behavior management and conditioning techniques by following the direction of the Audiologist.
  • Monitors and troubleshoots the functioning of screening and audiology equipment by performing listening checks, replacing batteries, cleaning/disinfecting units; performing minor maintenance and making arrangements for repairs including ongoing calibration.
  • Administers computerized hearing screenings to clients and ensures that the well-being of clients is observed during the test procedure.
  • Prepares clients for testing by the Audiologist.
  • Conducts hearing screening for clients, as well as re-screening when required.
  • Schedules clients for follow up appointments and refers to the appropriate location for diagnostic hearing assessments per established protocols; promotes compliance with follow up as per established protocols.
  • Participates in program meetings and maintains current knowledge of screening issues by reviewing screener training manual and attending related in-service training courses.
  • Maintains confidentiality of client and staff information.
  • Understands and adheres to the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Manitoba (CASLPM 2015) Guidelines for the Use of Support Personnel in Audiology) and Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) Supportive Personnel Guidelines Working with Audiologists (2004).
  • Adheres to all safety and health regulations and safe work practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of emergency procedures and acts on them as needed.
  • Performs administrative support duties as requested, including inputting data into computer programs, compiling information as needed.
  • Distribute patient materials including information brochures and correspondence to families.
  • Maintains supply and equipment inventories, identifies requirements, prepares order requisitions and maintains related records.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned that fall within the scope of the position.
