About The Position

Audiology Assistant provides support to the DCH Audiology staff by assisting with the delivery of audiology care, the dispensing of hearing aids, and the newborn hearing screening program. This role requires maintaining utmost confidentiality, adhering to hospital policies, and demonstrating ethical business practices. The assistant will support audiologists during patient assessments, technical tasks, and case histories. Responsibilities include maintaining stock levels, ensuring work areas and equipment are clean and functional, and preparing materials for ear molds. The role also involves performing hearing aid checks, minor repairs, cleaning, and patient/family instruction on hearing aid use and care. Additionally, the assistant will complete newborn hearing screenings, manage clerical functions for the hearing aid and newborn screening programs, and comply with clinical documentation requirements. Participation in patient care, departmental, and process improvement meetings is expected, as is contributing to community outreach. The position requires maintaining billable productivity levels, generating suggestions for process improvement, and providing holiday/weekend on-call coverage as needed. A strong understanding of evidence-based practice and proficiency in required computer applications are essential. The role also includes supporting purchasing needs and complying with infection control responsibilities. Occasional driving for hospital business may be required, and flexibility in scheduling and location is expected to support patient care needs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Current Texas License as an Audiology Assistant, or eligible and able to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Eligibility includes completion of the Council for Accreditation of Occupational Hearing Conservancy (CAOHC) course and examination.
  • Current CPR certification or will complete within 90 days upon hire

  • Experience working with children in a health care setting preferred

Responsibilities

  • Supports the delivery of audiology care.
  • Supports the dispensing of hearing aids.
  • Supports the newborn hearing screening program.
  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Assesses patient needs while supporting the audiologist(s) during audiometric assessment of patients.
  • Supports the audiologist by assisting with setup and technical tasks.
  • Maintains stock levels in the audiology clinical areas.
  • Supports clerical and other departmental organizational duties as needed.
  • Ensures work areas are cleaned and ready for the delivery of patient care at all times.
  • Ensures equipment is in working order and calibrations are current.
  • Marks as “out of service” and reports any malfunctioning or out-of-calibration equipment immediately.
  • Supports the audiologist by assisting with case histories.
  • Completes pure tone hearing screenings, tympanometric screenings and otoacoustic emission screening procedures.
  • Performs non-diagnostic otoscopy.
  • Supports hearing aid management by performing hearing aid checks, minor repairs, cleaning hearing aids, and instructing patients and families in proper use and care of hearing aids and other amplification devices.
  • Prepares materials for ear molds.
  • Completes newborn hearing screenings in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Completes all clerical functions required for hearing aid program and newborn hearing screening program.
  • Complies with clinical documentation requirements.
  • Participates in a variety of patient care related team meetings.
  • Participates in departmental meetings.
  • Participates in process improvement.
  • Participates in community outreach conducted on behalf of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Audiology Department.
  • Maintains billable productivity level as required.
  • Generates suggestions for improving work processes.
  • Provides Holiday/Week-end on call coverage as needed.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of evidence based practice.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use computer/software applications required for the job.
  • Ensures all equipment is in good working order with current calibration.
  • Supports purchasing needs within in the audiology department.
  • Complies with infection control responsibilities in the department.
  • Will occasionally drive for Driscoll Children’s Hospital business.
  • May be required to work at an alternate location (inpatient or outpatient based on skill set) to support patient care needs.
  • Demonstrates flexibility regarding departmental scheduling needs including but not limited to compliance with family-friendly hours, floating between settings and locations, offering hours that support the patient population, etc.
