About The Position

The Sound Engineer mentor is responsible for the training of student sound engineers to technical execution, maintenance, and real-time operation of audio systems to ensure a high-quality audience experience. By balancing artistic intent with technical precision, this role ensures all auditory elements—including vocals, instrumentation, and sound effects—are delivered with clarity, consistency, and emotional impact.

Requirements

Comprehensive understanding of acoustics, signal flow, and sound system design.
In-depth knowledge of microphone types, wireless frequency coordination, and amplification.
Familiarity with theatrical playback software and recording techniques.
Proficiency in operating both digital and analog mixing consoles.
Advanced troubleshooting skills for complex audio signal chains.
Strong communication and collaborative teamwork skills.
Ability to remain calm and resolve technical issues under intense pressure.
Ability to synchronize audio cues with live action and visual effects.
Ability to maintain focus for extended periods during live performances.
3 years proven experience in live sound reinforcement, preferably in a theatrical or performing arts setting, required.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre, sound engineering, music technology, or related field, preferred.

Responsibilities

Mentor students on the preparation and configuration of soundboards, playback systems, amplifiers, and speakers to establish a foundational audio infrastructure for performances.
Mentor students on deploying and securing microphones on performers and throughout the venue to ensure comprehensive sound capture.
Mentor students on conducting sound checks and level verification to identify and resolve equipment malfunctions before production begins.
Mentor students on Operating digital and analog mixing consoles during live rehearsals and performances to achieve a balanced acoustic environment.
Mentor students on how to adjust vocals, instruments, and playback in real time to compensate for performer dynamics and varying audience conditions.
Mentor students on how to Execute programmed sound cues with high precision to maintain the pacing and emotional arc of the production.
Mentor students on how to perform routine repairs and maintenance on microphones, wireless systems, and speakers to ensure long-term reliability.
Mentor students on how to diagnose and resolve technical failures under high-pressure live conditions to prevent performance interruptions.
Mentor students on how to maintain an organized and safe workspace for the sound team to facilitate efficient workflow and equipment longevity.
Mentor students on how to collaborate with the Sound Designer and Director to implement the artistic vision.
Mentor students on how to coordinate with lighting and projection departments where technical systems intersect.
