About The Position

MediaNews Group is seeking a results-driven Audience Product Manager to lead initiatives that enhance user engagement, front-end experiences, and content discovery across our network of digital news sites. This role complements the WordPress Product Manager by focusing on the audience-facing layer—how readers experience, interact with, and derive value from our journalism. The Audience Product Manager will oversee a portfolio of capabilities that drive audience growth and retention, including SEO, Obituaries (Endless Tributes), ADA accessibility, A/B testing, analytics integration, ad and privacy technologies, and front-end optimizations. Working closely with newsroom stakeholders, engineering teams, and external vendors, this position plays a key role in shaping how millions of readers connect with our content every day. Please note we will be reviewing and interviewing applicants for a January start date. Candidates must reside in CO, FL, MA, MN, OH, PA, or TX

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in product management, growth, or digital audience strategy, preferably in a media, publishing, or content-driven organization
  • Strong understanding of SEO, ADA/accessibility compliance, web analytics, and A/B testing methodologies
  • Demonstrated success in managing cross-functional projects involving editorial, design, and engineering teams
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a proven ability to translate technical possibilities into actionable business outcomes
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret engagement and revenue data to inform product decisions
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Computer Science, or a related field

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with WordPress, front-end frameworks, and tools like Google Analytics 4, Parse.ly, Looker, or Marfeel preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the Audience Team product roadmap, covering key initiatives such as SEO optimization, accessibility (ADA) compliance, audience engagement tools, and analytics integrations
  • Prioritize and define requirements for initiatives, including Gutenberg, Obituaries, Ad Integrations & Monetization, A/B Testing, Themes, and Front-End Design improvements
  • Use audience data and business insights to identify growth opportunities and refine engagement strategies across all digital properties
  • Create and manage Jira stories for audience-related initiatives, ensuring clear acceptance criteria and measurable outcomes
  • Act as the Product Owner for the Audience Team—creating epics and stories, working through backlog refinement, and prioritizing development to ensure clear alignment between strategic goals and development work
  • Partner with design, engineering, and data teams to deliver high-quality user experiences optimized for engagement, accessibility, and performance
  • Collaborate closely with Local Sales Teams and the Programmatic Advertising Team to ensure audience experiences, ad placements, and engagement initiatives align with monetization strategies and revenue goals
  • Support newsroom and marketing teams in leveraging A/B testing, SEO improvements, and front-end enhancements to improve readership metrics
  • Drive experimentation strategies that inform homepage layouts, content recommendations, and engagement patterns
  • Own audience-facing product components such as Search, Themes, and Autotemplates, ensuring consistent performance and UX across all sites
  • Collaborate with advertising, marketing, and analytics teams to balance monetization with reader experience
  • Partner with editorial leadership to enhance end-user support and optimize workflows that directly impact reader satisfaction
  • Lead implementation and oversight of Privacy Initiatives (e.g., Osano CMP) and accessibility standards
  • Manage relationships with third-party vendors supporting 3rd Party Content Integrations, analytics, or front-end technology
  • Coordinate with engineering to maintain and enhance ad integrations and audience data pipelines
  • Serve as the bridge between newsroom, ad operations, marketing, and platform teams to ensure audience-focused decisions are informed by both data and editorial insight
  • Clearly communicate product updates, roadmap milestones, and audience performance metrics to leadership and stakeholders
  • Collaborate closely with the WordPress Product Manager to ensure that both content creation (CMS) and content experience (Audience) strategies advance in lockstep
