About The Position

The Unified Government Legal Department offers a unique range of opportunities within the legal profession. Attorneys in this department provide legal opinions to elected officials, the County Administrator, and UG and BPU staff. The team's mission is to deliver high-quality, cost-effective legal services to the unified city and county government, the Board of Public Utilities, and various other boards and commissions. Responsibilities include managing or overseeing litigation involving the UG, BPU, or their representatives, reviewing and preparing contracts, and drafting and reviewing policies, ordinances, and resolutions. The department also handles claims, tax appeal cases, and delinquent tax sales, acquires property through eminent domain, and prosecutes city ordinance violations in Municipal Court. This is a collaborative environment with no billable hours, offering a unique work experience. The selected candidate will focus on labor and employment matters, other workplace-related legal issues, contract review, civil litigation representation for UG departments, and legal training, providing variety and professional development. Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Kansas
  • Pass a post offer criminal history background check
  • Pass a physical examination
  • Pass a drug screen
  • Submit proof of identity and employment eligibility

Responsibilities

  • Handle labor and employment matters and other workplace related legal issues
  • Review contracts
  • Represent the Unified Government's various departments in civil litigation
  • Create and provide legal training
  • Handle or monitor litigation filed against or on behalf of the UG, BPU, or its representatives
  • Review and prepare contracts
  • Draft and review policies, ordinances, and resolutions
  • Handle claims and tax appeal cases
  • Conduct delinquent tax sales
  • Acquire property through eminent domain process
  • Prosecute all violations of city ordinances in Municipal Court
