The New York City Law Department is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Family Court Division’s Interstate Child Support Unit (“ICSU”). The Interstate Child Support Unit litigates child support cases in New York State Family Court. Attorneys in the Unit are responsible for the preparation and presentation of petitions to establish paternity and child support as well as appearing on and defending applications for modification of previously established orders. They will also prepare and present enforcement matters, file and respond to motions, file objections and rebuttals, conduct discovery, including document production and inspection, prepare memorandum of law, interview clients and witnesses, negotiate settlements, and conduct hearings and trials. Attorneys in the Unit appear primarily before support magistrates and Family Court judges. ICSU attorneys participate in a citywide rotation of night and weekend court assignments in the juvenile delinquency unit and may be required to work on cases, attend community events and meetings, and complete other responsibilities in the evening and weekend hours. This position provides attorneys with opportunities to develop their litigation skills. The role is particularly suited for attorneys seeking meaningful public service, particularly in New York State Family Court.
