The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions. This Public Safety Attorney III position will individually litigate moderately complex cases for the Public Safety Section from start to finish in federal and state courts from federal civil rights claims to personnel actions. This position provides professional litigation services, legal analysis, and thoughtful, meaningful legal advice to mid-level, senior, and executive managers of client agencies and internally at NC DOJ. This position is funded by the Department of Adult Corrections, which will be the primary client-agency, but work will also be required for State Highway Patrol, State Bureau of Investigation, and Public Safety. This position may also serve as an advisor to or assist other attorneys in the section on routine and complex matters to provide support and such other duties as assigned.
