About The Position

This position provides legal advice and guidance to the Sheriff’s Office leadership and staff on operational, administrative, and legal matters. The incumbent will collaborate with the Gwinnett County Law Department on litigation and stay abreast of changes in laws and regulations affecting the Sheriff’s Office.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate
  • Five years of experience as an attorney
  • Member in good standing with the Georgia Bar and admitted to practice in the Superior Courts of Georgia
  • Public safety background investigation, including criminal history, motor vehicle records, and fingerprinting
  • On-call rotation and after-hours response, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in all aspects of State and Federal litigation, particularly in representing local governments
  • Experience in reviewing and drafting contracts
  • Experience in local government or related public setting
  • Admitted to practice in the Court of Appeals for the State of Georgia, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia

Responsibilities

  • Supervising staff, as assigned, to include prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, ensuring staff are trained, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, maintaining a healthy and safe working environment, and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Providing legal advice and guidance to Sheriff’s Office leadership and staff on operational, administrative, and legal matters.
  • Reviewing, drafting, negotiating, and interpreting contracts, agreements, policies, procedures, ordinances, regulations, and other legal documents.
  • Identifying and mitigating legal risks while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws, constitutional requirements, court orders, and professional standards.
  • Conducting legal research, analyzing legal issues, and providing written and oral legal opinions, recommendations, and training.
  • Preparing and reviewing pleadings, motions, memoranda, briefs, agreements, discovery materials, and other legal documents related to litigation and legal matters.
  • Managing and supporting litigation matters, including developing case strategy, coordinating discovery, preparing for and participating in depositions, hearings, trials, appeals, mediations, and settlements.
  • Collaborating with the Gwinnett County Law Department, outside counsel, Sheriff’s Office leadership, and other interested parties on litigation, legal issues, and operational matters.
  • Responding to legal inquiries and advising Sheriff’s Office personnel and other interested parties regarding legal requirements, procedures, and related matters.
  • Developing and delivering legal training and communicating updates regarding changes in laws, regulations, policies, and legal requirements affecting Sheriff’s Office operations.
  • Performing other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Communicate and engage with staff, citizens, leadership, and elected officials as needed.
