About The Position

The Division of Administrative Law (DAL) is Louisiana's centralized administrative hearings panel. When disputes arise between government agencies and those they regulate, due process hearings should be fair and impartial, convenient to citizens, and conducted professionally. DAL is independent from the agencies served, preserving fairness and impartiality in administrative hearings. The Division of Administrative Law is seeking a Attorney-General Counsel 2 to serve as the agency's chief legal counsel. This position provides legal advice to executive leadership, represents the agency in litigation and administrative proceedings, and ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and agency policies.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law plus six years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Applicants must have a license to practice law in Louisiana, be in good standing with the LSBA, and be a resident of Louisiana.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the chief legal advisor to the Director on legal, regulatory, operational, and employment matters.
  • Represents the agency in litigation, administrative proceedings, and other legal matters before state and federal courts.
  • Provides legal guidance to executive leadership to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Civil Service Rules.
  • Drafts, reviews, and negotiates contracts, agreements, policies, administrative rules, legislation, and other legal documents.
  • Oversees agency appeals, records management, public records requests, and records retention compliance.
  • Monitors legal developments, evaluates proposed legislation, and advises leadership on matters affecting agency operations.
  • Develops and implements agency policies, strategic initiatives, and staff training programs, including Continuing Legal Education (CLE) compliance.
  • Represents the agency before legislative committees, governmental entities, and professional organizations as directed.
  • Supervises legal staff and performs other related duties as assigned.
