About The Position

The Georgia Department of Revenue is seeking an experienced attorney to join the Tax Policy Division as an Attorney 3 or Attorney 4. This role involves providing analysis and recommendations on legal issues, assisting with the implementation and administration of new statutory mandates, and performing detailed research. The candidate will also help with the promulgation of new regulations, review and advise on tax-related questions, and draft legal instruments, policy bulletins, and legal opinions. Additionally, the position includes participating in the negotiation of settlement agreements and tax controversies. The attorney will serve as a trusted legal advisor, partnering with Department leaders, the Office of the Attorney General, legislators, and stakeholders to resolve complex legal issues and mitigate organizational risk. This is an opportunity to provide strategic legal counsel to executive leadership, impact statewide tax policy, support legislative initiatives, and shape the legal framework for a major state agency.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university.
  • License to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity.
  • Two (2) years of relevant legal experience for Attorney 3.
  • Three (3) years of relevant legal experience for Attorney 4.
  • Three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022) for Attorney 4.
  • Must have filed a State of Georgia tax return for the past five years.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of tax laws or professional tax experience.
  • Prior work experience or internship in a law office, accounting firm, for a judge or legislator, or for a business in a finance/accounting/investment related role.
  • Knowledge of the legislative process.
  • Coursework in tax and corporate law, economics, accounting, finance, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of statutes, court decisions, and state and federal laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the legislature, judiciary, and other executive branch agencies.
  • Communicate with businesses and other taxpayers to receive feedback on prospective regulations and legislation.
  • Prepare legal documents.
  • Translate legal issues into practical recommendations.
  • Conduct legal review of taxpayer inquiries, credit and exemption requests, and taxpayer protests.
  • Analyze, organize, and present facts in a clear and logical form in both oral and written presentations.
