About The Position

The Attending Physician, General Anesthesiology & Pain Management will be responsible for patient care, resident/fellow training, daily administrative duties, and conducting quality assurance projects per the needs of the Anesthesiology and Pain Management Service throughout CCH covering services as John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, Provident Hospital, and clinics/procedure areas where anesthesiology/pain services are provided. The scope of these activities cover hospitalized patients and all phases of ambulatory care. The majority of the Anesthesiologist's time will be devoted to patient care. Administrative duties and quality assurance activities will be offered based on the needs of the department.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university is required
  • Licensed as a physician in the State of Illinois or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment is required
  • Successfully completed Anesthesiology Residency training and Fellowship training in Pain Management is required
  • Board certified or Board eligible in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiologist (ABA) is required
  • Active Illinois Controlled Substance License or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment is required
  • Active Drug Enforcement Agency License or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment is required
  • Active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of experience in an academic program or fellowship training is preferred
  • One (1) year experience with fluoroscopic guided techniques is preferred
  • Board certified in Pain Management is preferred
  • Proficiency with Ultrasound is preferred
  • Proficiency in trials and permanent implants of SCS and Intrathecal pumps is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provides anesthetic and pain management care throughout the hospital while meeting and exceeding compliance standards
  • Provides complete range of anesthetic care to patients including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post anesthesia care in compliance with the national Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations standards
  • Works independently, clinically supervises residents/fellows, and provides medical direction to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist’s (CRNA)
  • Provides anesthesia related care in all dedicated areas of the Operating Rooms (OR), Obstetrics, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Intensive Care Units, Ward, Pain and where service is requested
  • Examines patients, obtains medical history, and uses diagnostic test to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures
  • Coordinates and directs clinical work during medical procedures with nurses, residents/fellows, CRNA's, medical technicians, and health care providers
  • Administers anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures using local, regional, general, and Monitor Anesthesia Care (MAC) types of anesthesia
  • Coordinates the administration of anesthetics with surgeons during procedures in the operation room
  • Provides and maintains life support and airway management as needed, and helps prepare patients for emergency surgery
  • Determines when patients have recovered, or stabilized enough, to be transferred to Intensive Care Unit, or discharged home following surgery
  • Works daily hours, take 1st call (in-house), as well as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th calls or other calls based on OR needs
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned
