About The Position

Under direct supervision, the Attendant – Recreation Facility (Coastal Resources) provides support for recreation facilities, activities, and youth programming within the City’s Coastal Resources Department, as assigned. This position assists with daily operations that promote environmental stewardship, recreation, and education. Duties may include basic facility upkeep, assisting with wildlife, natural resources, and conservation programs, supporting water-based activities, and providing courteous customer service to the public. When not actively engaged in program support, the employee will perform other assigned recreation facility duties.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Current and valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must respond to verbal communications.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in coastal wildlife, conservation, environmental education, recreation, or sailing programs, as applicable.
  • Previous experience in recreation, camp, environmental, conservation, sailing, or other settings, as applicable.
  • CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain (for Wind & Water Learning Center Sail Camp assignments and Beach assignments).
  • Experience as Sailing Instructor; experience as Head Sailing Instructor preferred (for Wind & Water Learning Center Sail Camp assignments).
  • Possess US Sailing Instructor Certification or equivalent preferred (for Wind & Water Learning Center Sail Camp assignments).

Responsibilities

  • Provides customer service by greeting visitors and offering general information about programs, facilities, safety guidelines, and rules.
  • Supervises participants and visitors to help ensure safety and compliance with facility and program rules.
  • Performs simple inspections of tools, vessels, equipment, and materials; report unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
  • Assists with basic data collection, attendance counts, checklists, or routine recordkeeping.
  • Supports event setup, breakdown, and general program logistics.
  • Follows established safety procedures and promptly reports hazards, incidents, or concerns.
  • Maintains inventory of related equipment and supplies.
  • Assists with City wide events and educational field trips.
  • Performs basic custodial, maintenance, and light construction tasks.
  • Performs work as part of the City’s Leave Only Footprints program (LOF).
  • Assists with the implementation and operation of this program, as well as other programs and initiatives within the Coastal Resources Department.
  • Monitors beaches and shoreline activity for enforcement issues, safety concerns, and debris.
  • Completes required reports and maintains records, such as progress; accident reports, wildlife related incidents, and documentation of interactions, debris/trash observed, collected and discarded.
  • Serves as an educational ambassador for the Coastal Resources programs such as LOF.
  • May deliver presentations or attend public events.
  • Interacts with the public, beach vendors, and others about rules violations.
  • Assists with wildlife incidents as needed.
  • Removes debris, abandoned equipment, and other items from beaches and/or waterways.
  • Handles, sorts, shreds, and processes collected materials as needed for recycling or disposal.
  • Assists with routine facility, site, shoreline, trail, or equipment upkeep, including light cleaning, organization, and basic maintenance.
  • Assists staff with coastal wildlife, natural resources, environmental education, and recreation programs.
  • Assists with youth sailing or water-based programs, including instructional support and participant supervision, as assigned.
  • Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Maintains a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times.
  • Provides responsible, appropriate, and satisfactory leadership within the City.
  • Communicates positively and professionally in all aspects of the position.
  • Attends all department meetings, City meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Becomes thoroughly familiar with all pertinent state and national policies and comply with said policies.
  • Complies with City wide and departmental policies, as well as state and federal laws.
  • Ensures the positive promotion of the City.
  • Is prompt and punctual in reporting for work, meetings, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
