This position specifically supports nursing staff with delegated tasks of indirect and direct patient care in the operating room arena, under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Requirements

  • Must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement.
  • High school diploma or GED - must be verifiable.
  • Demonstrate age-related competency by completion of required education and post-test.
  • Demonstrate appropriate working knowledge of specialty equipment.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the patient-care setting.
  • Strong communication and computer skills.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and general hospital/clinic procedures preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and maintains assigned items and areas to facilitate smooth daily operations (80% of responsibilities).
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment in the surgical department/suites following Joint Commission and AORN/Infection control guidelines.
  • Works closely with nursing staff, scrub techs, Nurse Anesthetist, Surgeon, and Anesthesiologist, as needed.
  • Must be flexible to changing priorities and handle changing workflows.
  • Participates in Commitment to Safety by providing and collecting data to improve patient/staff safety and OR efficiencies.
  • Actively participates as a member of the patient care team maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Performs job duties to support patient care under the direction of nursing staff and is able to function independently to complete assigned tasks.
  • Serves as courier for the surgical department (obtaining/returning blood products, obtaining beds for patient transfer, transporting specimens to the lab in compliance with The College of American Pathologists and The Joint Commission guidelines).
  • Assists circulator nurse, surgical team, and physician with patient positioning, and providing patient dignity and privacy during transport and transfer, if needed.
