About The Position

The Director of Experience and Belonging will report to the Associate AD - Belonging. The director will lead and supervise a number of student-employees. This position will provide strategic leadership and guidance in fostering an environment of belonging. They will lead out in building and sustaining community through innovative event execution; overseeing comprehensive data analysis to drive transformative change; and being an integral part of a collaborative team. This position is committed to building bridges of understanding, embracing diversity, believing that each individual is a beloved child of God, and managing projects and people with enthusiasm, respect, and integrity. The position has outstanding interpersonal and written communication skills.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 1 year experience in secondary or higher education, diversity and inclusion, college athletics, student development, public administration, or related field
  • Understanding of NCAA leadership development programs, events, and networks (e.g., Career in Sports Forum, Emerging Leaders Seminar, etc.)
  • Strong public relations skills
  • Event Planning experience
  • Advanced computer and office skills
  • Willingness to comply with NCAA and Big 12 Conference policy
  • Understand the nature and mission of Brigham Young University and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and willingness to abide by the BYU Honor Code
  • Basic knowledge of intercollegiate athletics
  • Ability to interact well with student-athletes, parents, donors, coaches, co-workers, administrators, and the public
  • Professional appearance and demeanor

Nice To Haves

  • 3+ years of experience in secondary or higher education, diversity and inclusion/ belonging, college athletics, student development, public administration, event planning or related field
  • Ability and knowledge to interact with various BYU departments

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute high-impact experience and belonging initiatives as directed by the Assoc. AD Belonging.
  • Select guest speakers and facilitators to conduct belonging educational programs
  • Direct the servicing and advising minority student-athletes; specifically, those who identify as LGBTQ+, Same-sex attracted (SSA), ethnic/ racial minorities, international student-athletes, and religiously diverse student-athletes
  • Direct strategic research and assessment initiatives that advance department objectives
  • Develop and implement leadership development programs that focus on and include aspects of increasing self-awareness (values, personal strengths/ weakness, communication styles, leadership styles, etc.), emotional intelligence and communication (emotional self-management, how to navigate crucial conversations, etc), motivation (intrinsic/ extrinsic, how to motivate/ inspire others), culture creation and management, followership, peer-mentorship, and service leadership training.
  • Oversee the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
  • Coordinate strategically and collaborate with campus departments including Office of Belonging, Multicultural Student Services, Women’s Services and Resources, International Student and Scholar Services, the Sorensen Center, and various university colleges
  • Liaison and work closely with our sports medicine professionals, including our mental health staff, team trainers, and our strength & conditioning department to implement and execute programming specific to the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health of our student-athletes
