About The Position

This person promotes mental health on the Pepperdine University campus through direct intervention, outreach/prevention programming, consultation, and training. As a staff member in Student Affairs who works closely with students, this person serves as a Christian role model to students. This particular position provides mental health services to currently enrolled Pepperdine students, with an emphasis on serving student athletes. Working together with both the Counseling Center and Athletics departments, the counselor works to create a safe space in which students can process psychological concerns and/or reach performance-related goals.

Requirements

  • Licensed in California within one year of start date as a psychologist, marriage and family therapist, professional clinical counselor, or social worker. (Candidate is in the process of obtaining their post-degree hours and/or preparing to sit for the licensure exam.)
  • Verifiable training and experience working with individuals of diverse racial, cultural, economic, and religious backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in individual therapy, crisis intervention/management.
  • Ability to work with students and parents with a variety of presentations.
  • Ability to collaborate with other professionals who serve students.
  • Committed to equity and inclusion and vested in sustaining a culture with those values.
  • Proficiency with PCs, Windows-based software, and standard MS Office applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed as a psychologist, marriage and family therapist, professional clinical counselor, or social worker.
  • Previous experience providing counseling services to student athletes.
  • Able to provide clinical supervision in California.
  • University Counseling Center experience.
  • A minimum of three years verifiable experience working in a mental health setting with young adults, adults, and couples experiencing emotional problems.
  • Interest in group therapy, developing outreach events and collaborating with other departments.
  • Proficiency with Titanium, SPSS.

Responsibilities

  • Provide therapy for currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students experiencing a wide range of difficulties.
  • Conduct preventative psycho-educational workshops.
  • Provide consultation to faculty, staff, and parents regarding students of concern, assist in training re: campus mental health issues.
  • Document and maintain client files.
  • Manage crisis situations and provide crisis intervention.
  • Respond to clinical emergencies.
  • Serve on the Residential Emergency Response Team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Uphold University mission through work performed.
