About The Position

The overall purpose of the job is to coach the Olds College Rodeo Program and foster team initiatives that support the growth, development, and long-term success of our student-athletes in and out of the arena. Reporting to the OC Ag General Manager, this role involves managing team operations, coaching the men's and women’s teams, and coordinating leadership and community engagement activities for all rodeo student-athletes. Rodeo Coach facilitates the growth and development of student-athletes, enhancing the college's reputation and ensuring program alignment with Broncos values and strategic plans. Our intercollegiate teams have established a rich tradition of success that ranks Olds College as among the finest intercollegiate programs in the Canadian Colleges Rodeo Association (CCRA). This unique role is responsible for coaching the college rodeo team, organizing practice and competition schedules, overseeing the safety and development of student-athletes, and supporting the broader operations of the athletic department.

Requirements

  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification required or willing to obtain.
  • Demonstrated experience handling, managing, and working with rodeo stock, combined with a thorough understanding of animal welfare standards and safe stock-handling practices is required.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education, skills, and experience will be considered.
  • Experience with the coordination of budgets and scheduling.
  • Demonstrated ability to working in a team environment while displaying flexibility and ability to adapt.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Requires travel for competitions and recruiting.
  • Current Criminal Reference check with a Vulnerable Sector Check that is free of any offenses.

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of NCCP Level 2 (either "In Training" or fully certified status) is desired.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in coaching rodeo athletes, at collegiate level or professional level is preferred.
  • Competitive rodeo experience may be considered in lieu of coaching experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise student-athletes at CCRA rodeos and exhibition competitions, ensuring adherence to the Athlete Code of Conduct.
  • Design and implement a Yearly Training Plan (practice planning, competition schedule, team building).
  • Maintain an active recruiting plan focused on ladies’ and mens’ events and communicating potential recruits with other coaches to ensure all athletes are signed according to Broncos Athletics procedures.
  • Ensure the appropriate academic standards of the student-athletes are monitored and met.
  • Participate in athlete check ins to ensure athletes are in a positive space academically, mentally and physically.
  • Maintain equipment and facilities used by the rodeo team. Communicate in coordination with the OC Ag General for facility and equipment maintenance.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive team culture that promotes academic and athletic excellence.
  • Plan, Schedule, and Conduct Practices: Schedule, supervise, and attend all weekly practice sessions, and competitions with an emphasis on skill development, safety, and competitive preparedness.
  • Utilize appropriate tactical and technical strategies during practice and competition, and efficiently analyze performance to provide constructive feedback to student-athletes.
  • Ensure animal and human welfare is a priority at ALL times and that all aspects of the Animal Use Protocol are in place and followed daily.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely documentation, tracking, and reporting of all rodeo student injuries, safety incidents, and animal welfare practices in accordance with college policies and the Institutional Animal Care and Use(IACUC).
  • Ensure safety measures are in place to reduce risk of injury for athletes, coaches and spectators.
  • Establish and maintain an environment conducive to the welfare and academic success of student-athletes that fosters collaboration with students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and the community.
  • Participates and represents the rodeo program and Athletic Department at community events as directed.
  • Foster supportive relationships in the community that promote the rodeo program as well as the college.
  • Participate in collaborative relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Assist in coordinating fundraising opportunities, alumni engagement and special events such as, rodeo clinics, jackpots and alumni rodeo events.
  • In collaboration with Associate Coach ensure varsity rosters are submitted to the CCRA in a timely manner.
  • Actively participate in CCRA meetings and ensure best practices are being encouraged and followed.
  • Report policy changes and recommendations back to the OC Ag General Manager or Dean, Werklund School of Agriculture and Technology.
  • Contribute to maintaining healthy budgets across all programs.
  • Support and act in accordance with the Broncos Athletics strategic plan.
