About The Position

The Athletic Director provides leadership, administration, and oversight of the interscholastic athletic program at Hopewell High School and Carter G. Woodson Middle School. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with Virginia High School League (VHSL) regulations and applicable federal, state, and local requirements; supervising coaches; administering student-athlete eligibility; managing athletic facilities, events, budgets, and resources; and promoting a safe, equitable, and competitive athletic program. The Athletic Director serves as the principal’s designee for athletic operations and collaborates with students, families, staff, community partners, and athletic governing organizations to support student-athlete achievement, sportsmanship, safety, and personal growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required
  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience
  • Successful coaching and/or athletic leadership experience required
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with students, staff, families, and community stakeholders
  • Hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required or obtained within a timeframe established by the division
  • Maintain all certifications and training required by law, VHSL regulations, and School Board policy, including but not limited to: concussion management (Va. Code §22.1-271.5), sudden cardiac arrest prevention (Va. Code §22.1-271.6), mandated reporter training for child abuse and neglect (Va. Code §63.2-1509), and heat illness prevention protocols in accordance with VHSL regulations and VDOE guidelines.
  • Thorough knowledge of interscholastic athletic program administration and operations
  • Thorough knowledge of VHSL rules, regulations, eligibility requirements, and participation standards
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies governing school athletics and student participation
  • Knowledge of athletic event management, risk management, facility operations, and student-athlete safety practices
  • Knowledge of budget development, financial management, purchasing procedures, and inventory control
  • Knowledge of coaching supervision, staff development, and performance evaluation practices
  • Knowledge of community engagement, booster organizations, and public relations as they relate to school athletic programs
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and direction for a comprehensive athletic program
  • Ability to supervise, support, and evaluate coaching staff
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, officials, community members, and athletic organizations
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form and represent the school positively in public settings
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple programs, events, and operational responsibilities simultaneously
  • Ability to analyze information, solve problems, and make sound decisions in complex and time-sensitive situations

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction for all interscholastic athletic programs.
  • Promote a culture of sportsmanship, academic achievement, student leadership, inclusion, and positive athletic participation.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate procedures that support effective athletic program operations.
  • Establish goals and priorities that align athletic programs with school and division expectations.
  • Review athletic program effectiveness and implement continuous improvement efforts.
  • Administer all student-athlete eligibility requirements in accordance with VHSL regulations.
  • Maintain accurate eligibility, participation, and athletic records.
  • Coordinate physical examinations, insurance documentation, participation forms, and related requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with concussion management, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness prevention, emergency action plans, and other student-athlete safety requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and records in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of coaches.
  • Conduct coaches’ meetings and provide training regarding athletic department procedures, VHSL requirements, safety expectations, and professional conduct.
  • Support the professional growth and development of coaching staff.
  • Address coaching performance concerns through appropriate supervisory processes.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement among athletic staff.
  • Develop and maintain the athletic master schedule.
  • Coordinate and supervise athletic contests, tournaments, and special events.
  • Coordinate transportation, officials, security, medical coverage, facility preparation, and event staffing.
  • Ensure safe and effective operation of athletic events for participants and spectators.
  • Develop and implement emergency procedures and event management protocols.
  • Oversee athletic facilities, fields, equipment, and uniforms to ensure safety, readiness, proper maintenance, and effective stewardship of resources, including budget planning that supports ongoing maintenance needs and future capital improvement opportunities.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies, unexpected operational challenges, and time-sensitive situations.
  • Develop and administer the athletic department budget.
  • Monitor revenues, expenditures, gate receipts, fundraising activities, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with division financial procedures and purchasing requirements.
  • Oversee inventory management, equipment replacement schedules, and resource allocation.
  • Manage contracts, agreements, and athletic service providers in accordance with division procedures.
  • Serve as liaison among coaches, student-athletes, families, booster organizations, community partners, and athletic governing organizations.
  • Communicate athletic program expectations, procedures, and information to stakeholders.
  • Represent the school at district, regional, state, and VHSL meetings.
  • Coordinate athletic awards programs, recognition events, and public information activities.
  • Maintain productive working relationships with community organizations and supporters while preserving appropriate professional boundaries and decision-making authority.
  • Address concerns and conflicts in a professional, timely, and solutions-focused manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
