About The Position

The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the comprehensive management of athletic health care services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athletes. This role ensures a safe and effective environment for athletic participation through collaboration with coaches, physicians, and school administration. The agreed upon services will include evaluation and treatment of injuries sustained by School’s students during school athletic events, application of first aid and recommendation for exercise or physical measures for minor injuries under the direction, supervision and review of the physicians to be determined by Arlington High School. The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for the athletic training facility while there, including opening and closing. The Athletic Trainer will also advise the school on inventory status, requisitioning of supplies (i.e. tape, pre-wrap, etc.), and or facility management. The Athletic Trainer will keep accurate records of all athletic injuries reported by school students as occurring during school athletic events and all rehabilitation procedures administered by Athletic Trainer. The Athletic Trainer will also prepare reports on all athletic injuries sustained by school students during school events for the nursing and athletic offices as may be requested. In cooperation with the Athletic Director and staff, the Athletic Trainer will develop and distribute to Athletic Director, Nurse, and Coaches the following information: location of emergency phone and phone numbers. Inspect and take inventory of all team medical kits prior to the beginning of each season. Provide coordination between injured athletes, coaching staff, and team or family physician.

Requirements

  • Certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers
  • Massachusetts State Licensure as an Athletic Trainer (or eligibility for licensure by start date)
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Bachelors or Masters Degree from a CAATE accredited program
  • Familiarity with MIAA rules and regulations per Sports Medicine Coverage and Athletic procedures

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in the high school or collegiate athletic settings preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent or Athletic Director may find appropriate and in conformity with state licensure requirements

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations, organization, and maintenance of the Athletic Training Room and all related medical equipment and supplies
  • Provide immediate and ongoing care for athletic injuries and illnesses, including injury evaluation, emergency response, and referral to appropriate medical professionals
  • Assess and determine student-athletes’ readiness for participation and administer medical clearances as appropriate
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized rehabilitation and return-to-play programs in collaboration with physicians and healthcare providers
  • Apply preventative and protective measures, including taping, bracing, and bandaging, to reduce injury risk
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation of all evaluations, treatments, and athlete interactions
  • Communicate effectively with coaches, physicians, administration, and families regarding injury status, recovery progress, and participation limitations
  • Serve as the primary medical responder for athletic events, including coverage of all home football games, home hockey games, and other athletic events as assigned
  • Prioritize and attend high-risk sporting events based on injury prevalence and program needs
  • Monitor and ensure safe conditions of athletic facilities, including the athletic training room, fields, and weight room
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director to support weight room safety, functionality, and athlete usage protocols
  • Coordinate baseline and follow-up concussion testing (e.g., ImPACT) and manage return-to-play protocols in accordance with best practices
  • Facilitate athlete education on injury prevention, recovery strategies, nutrition, and hydration
  • Partner with external organizations (e.g., Micheli Center) to enhance athlete care and education initiatives
  • Manage inventory, ordering, and budgeting of athletic training supplies and equipment, including recommendations for purchase, repair, and replacement
  • Prepare and maintain treatment areas and equipment before and after practices and competitions, ensuring cleanliness and readiness
  • Attend required meetings and events, including seasonal coaches meetings and annual athletics programming
  • Maintain all required certifications and licensure through continuing education
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Athletic Director
